I recently got an iPhone so I have been using the read only area to save myself time and battery life. My qustion is how often is that area updated?

The archives are never really updated. When a forum is shut down, it goes to the archives. Also, when a forum gets so many posts that it is too heavy a load for the servers, the posts are sent to the archives. With the new servers, that isn't likely to happen any more.
