Read this before doing business with Emerson Knives!

Yes, in my opinion, YOU are completely wrong. What I can't understand is why you would expect Emerson to exchange a knife that you bought from a retailer?!? In my opinion, you are SOL as to taking any "actions" against Emerson. My bet is that Emerson states in their sales policy that there will be a restocking fee on exchanges.

I'd ask to talk with Ernie personally. Its an Emerson knife regardless of where it came from and perhaps you should have contacted the retailer rather than EKI but the fact is you didn't, you contacted the maker. If a verbal agreement was made regardless you have reason to be upset IMO but perhaps more with yourself than Emerson for not divulging that you didn't buy the knife in question directly from them and perhaps again for not reviewing their policy on the web site or asking them about it before mailing it. However, if your card was charged more than you agreed to I know how I'd handle it personally would be to contact my card holder bank about it. But I'd speak with Ernie before doing anything. Explain to him, the man, the guy in charge and see if he agrees with the way you were treated there.

The least they can do at EKI for a military member or any buyer of their product with a bad taste in his mouth over one of their knives or unapproved billing if the facts you present are accurate is allow you that short audience with him on the phone to at least discuss it civil like.

This can always be hairy to bring up something like this on a public forum and I'm not sure you won't come to regret this to a large extent. Be thankful it was here and not on another forum though where you would not even be allowed to post again or read the replies after something like this was brought up. This kind of public outcry is compounded at times you see? Particularly when you have fanatical enthusiasts to deal with on the one end that will defend Ernie tooth and nail even if his company may be at fault even partially. Ernie will see past that though and I'd at least make an attempt to contact him directly either by phone or by email.

I would ask anyone that reads your post to realize there are always two sides to every coin. We have not heard the other side. In truth I really don't think its our business to either.

If you can't get the bitter taste out of your mouth on this deal list the new knife you have now for sale and be done with it. Being a plain edge you'll have little trouble selling it.

Why didn't you contact the retailer you bought it from? If I bought a Cub Cadet mower from Home Depot that wasn't to my liking, I would take it back to Home Depot.

yep i would ask to speak to ernie about it, but hey if its there policy/etc, i dont know if he will do anything, he might, worth a try i suppose.

and i also think ya should have sent it back where ya got it from, the 1st lady ya talked to might have assumed ya had bought from them, if ya didnt say otherwise. i dont undertstand why ya went to EKI if ya bought the thing elsewhere, EKI sells at retail and i'm sure you paid less than retail i would imagine so imho to buy at wholesale and want to exchange at retail isnt right either.

and yes be glad ya posted this on BF rather than some of the other EKI forums.

good luck though.

please give Mr Emerson or Megan or Rachael a call and talk to them....I believe EKI supports the military, so they will take care of you in a fair way. I do agree that if you didn't like the model, you should exchange it with the dealer...but since you didn't, please just do speak to EKI and see if they can help.

I once had a little problem with EKI customer service many years ago, but Mr Emerson made it right - I have lost that email from him (it was in my hotmail and I lose my emails as I didn't access it for more than 3 months) but he was very fair, reasonable and understanding. He is also the right kind of boss - he backs his people (that's an important thing). However, he had the power to be kind and gracious also and I am a fan now.

Don't be questioning the ethics of Ernest and Mary Emerson. You have no idea.

You bought a knife that you apparently had not held, and did not like it. Thats a chance you take when you buy something over the internet sight unseen. I have done that plenty. I sure as heck did not complain to Sal Glesser at Spyderco when one of his fine knives just did not feel right in my hand.

That you went to the maker and not the outlet where you bought it is odd.

That the maker would trade anything out that was not defective, just because a customer does not like it, speaks well for the maker, particularly since it was purchased out in some cyber-retail outlet.

Do what most of us do. Sell or trade what you don't want, and buy or trade for what you do want.

Let me get this straight you bought a product from a retail store it had no defects but you "just didn't like it".So you call the company and they are willing to exchange it for a minimal fee even though you had purchased it from somewhere else and it had NO DEFECTS.And you call that bad customer service? You sir are a A**.
