This post is a quick review of some classes I’ve taken with Bram Frank.
I’ve never studied FMA before, but like you-all, I am at least somewhat familiar with the Eastern MA, and the training methods –kata, etc. <- Huge generalization, obviously.
(disclaimer over)
Bram’s classes are INCREDIBLE. No BS. When you get there, it’s time to go. Pick up a stick or knife, and start doing it. The theory is explained along the way. I think you can learn so much in an hour, that it is a little hard to believe, and for me, hard to go home. When you make mistakes, you are corrected, and shown WHY it is a mistake. You are tying your arms up, leaving an opening for your opponent for a strike or trap, or even putting yourself off balance. I cannot wait for the Gunting seminar this month. You should go if Bram is within reach to you. It may be the best money you’ve spent recently, and you’ll come away with useful info. So, Get off your ass and Get to a seminar! Or Move to Tampa Bay so you can take classes with Bram like I did (totally exaggerated coincidence)! Anyway, if you’re wondering, it’s totally worth it.
My thanks go out to Jim Clifton, for his initial encouragement, Bram Frank for being a great instructor, and My GF, Halimah, for not breaking my balls, and encouraging me to go.

Yours Truly, Joe
Arnis student, Home team member of the Gunting cult.

Are you saying that you're a Modern Arnis student who has never studied Filipino Martial Arts before? Or does FMA stand for something different in this context?

Mr. Frank sounds like a great instructor and that Gunting is one beautiful folder. I heard that he also may have influenced Benchmade's AFCK knives. Glad to hear that the designer of the Spyderco Gunting gave you so many goodies during the seminar you attended.

Thom, I take arnis with Bram weekly. I had not taken any FMA before. And the Gunting is awesome! Thaks, Joe

The more you handle and train with the Gunting the more 'fluid' it feels. Been able to incorprate your own style within the Gunting system makes everyone have his/her own flavour.

The Gunting live blade is great but the drone is better! The drone makes dexterity drills safe to practise and not to mention not dissecting your partner on the first training day!

I'd be a lying bastard if I said the seminars aren't great.
I'd also be a lying idiot if I said I am NOT totally anticipating when Bram comes to Vancouver.

PS. Gunting, it works.
