I've been getting into bushcraft for a while now, but have only just now gotten a chance to dig into Kochanski's Bushcraft. In fact, I'm currently in the middle of the Axecraft chapter.

That said, I figured I'd head over here to BF and get some opinions from the experts. Recommendations for an all-purpose, general camp axe. Makers and models will suffice for now, as I'm just getting my feet wet and will be exploring a good bit as time goes on. General price and photos would be of great help, as well. Thanks, you guys. I appreciate the help.

I would look for a vintage single bit axe head 2 1/4 pounds and put it on a 26" handle. That size is commonly called a boys axe. That is the cheapest and best way to go imo. Or you could spend money on a new axe. Gransfors Bruks and Wetterlings have their fans in bushcraft. Also Hultafors are a little cheaper and seem to get good reviews. US made Council tool make good boys axes too.

I found a Kelly Flint Edge in 2.25 pounds and put it on a 28 inch handle from House Handle. I hung it low on the shoulder at is about at 27 inches. After profiling it it swings great. I now have a GB in the same weight - I am anxious to see how they compare - but honestly - the Flint Edge is a heck of an axe - and my total investment has been 30 dollars and a lot of learning and fun.

I think if you are going to use an axe - know how to rehang one. It just seems smart for bushcraft.
