Hi I'm a new-ish guy. I lurked as much as possible with limited access, whenever something I was googling happened to call up a thread here. This turned out to be a great source of info, so then eventually I registered, I guess about a month ago. Continued to read voraciously without posting. Finally started posting a few days ago. Today I made up my mind to pull the trigger, become a paying member...then I logged on to find I'd been given a warning over in the for sale forum.
There's a guy over there who is selling a knife. He didn't know how to get the pics into his post and he couldn't find info about the knife online. So I chimed in to help the guy. I showed him how to post his pics with the IMG tag, and I gave a link to an online vendor selling very similar models of the same brand of knife as he is offering.
I got a warning for that. Apparantly, we're not supposed to post in that forum unless we're buying, never mind I seriously considered buying one of them. I decided not to, frankly I just can't afford it at the moment. But still, the guy needed some help, and I am in the habit of helping people whenever I can...no moderator is going to change that about me.
Apparantly we're also not allowed to help a seller find info about his knife, even when that seller specifically states he is unable to find pricing or other info that would be helpful to everyone. "Let the buyer decide what it's worth" is what the anonymous mod told me.
Had I been given the option to reply to the warning, I would have politely explained that such a rule is detrimental to the seller and potential buyers...in other words, everyone involved.
Don't get me wrong. I moderated a very busy sportfishing forum for a couple years. I am very well acquainted with the challenges involved. I understand sometimes it's necessary to take action.
I also understand that from time to time, some mods act without thinking.
Some even fall into the habit of deriving pleasure from acts of censorship, especially when they can do it anonymously. When called on it, they'll claim they had no choice. "There wasn't any other way to handle it".
In my case, I don't believe it was reasonable to issue a warning. By helping that seller, I also helped potential buyers, and no harm was done.
Assuming I don't get the boot for bringing this up here, I'm going ahead with my subscription. I feel just a little bit better now that I've blown off some steam.
But if I find to my horror that this place is as overmoderated as my experience tonight seems to indicate, I'll cancel my subscription and go back to simply extracting whatever useful information I want, and refrain from making any kind of contribution.
Thanks for reading, and please speak openly.
