Hi I'm a new-ish guy. I lurked as much as possible with limited access, whenever something I was googling happened to call up a thread here. This turned out to be a great source of info, so then eventually I registered, I guess about a month ago. Continued to read voraciously without posting. Finally started posting a few days ago. Today I made up my mind to pull the trigger, become a paying member...then I logged on to find I'd been given a warning over in the for sale forum.

There's a guy over there who is selling a knife. He didn't know how to get the pics into his post and he couldn't find info about the knife online. So I chimed in to help the guy. I showed him how to post his pics with the IMG tag, and I gave a link to an online vendor selling very similar models of the same brand of knife as he is offering.

I got a warning for that. Apparantly, we're not supposed to post in that forum unless we're buying, never mind I seriously considered buying one of them. I decided not to, frankly I just can't afford it at the moment. But still, the guy needed some help, and I am in the habit of helping people whenever I can...no moderator is going to change that about me.

Apparantly we're also not allowed to help a seller find info about his knife, even when that seller specifically states he is unable to find pricing or other info that would be helpful to everyone. "Let the buyer decide what it's worth" is what the anonymous mod told me.

Had I been given the option to reply to the warning, I would have politely explained that such a rule is detrimental to the seller and potential buyers...in other words, everyone involved.

Don't get me wrong. I moderated a very busy sportfishing forum for a couple years. I am very well acquainted with the challenges involved. I understand sometimes it's necessary to take action.

I also understand that from time to time, some mods act without thinking.

Some even fall into the habit of deriving pleasure from acts of censorship, especially when they can do it anonymously. When called on it, they'll claim they had no choice. "There wasn't any other way to handle it".

In my case, I don't believe it was reasonable to issue a warning. By helping that seller, I also helped potential buyers, and no harm was done.

Assuming I don't get the boot for bringing this up here, I'm going ahead with my subscription. I feel just a little bit better now that I've blown off some steam.

But if I find to my horror that this place is as overmoderated as my experience tonight seems to indicate, I'll cancel my subscription and go back to simply extracting whatever useful information I want, and refrain from making any kind of contribution.

Thanks for reading, and please speak openly.

You got a warning, not an infraction. Warnings aren't just for you, it's a reminder to everyone.

Also, this is in the wrong forum entirely, so I'm moving it to the Service & Support forum.

Here's the nutshell: we have rules on this site for a reason. All of the rules were put in place because, despite our super lenient nature, there's some special snowflakes that just can't be sociable and do the right thing. So, sometimes things that seem draconian at first glance really aren't a big deal.

That said, you are expected to read the rules for each forum, and for the site in general, before you post. Let me read that - read the rules before posting. When in doubt, lurk more until you know what's acceptable.

Welcome to the site regardless.

Well I appreciate your candor, even yours knarf. I did ask you to speak openly.

Now that we're in the right forum, will someone please explain the reason for the rule I broke. I don't doubt there is some reason, I just haven't divined it on my own. Call me a snowflake then, but please enlighten me

BTW I did read the rules, and I still didn't realize I was breaking any of them.

Also, there's a rule about replying to posts in the sale forum, "no chatting"...why is that? Does it put too much strain on the system? It seems a shame, A good back and forth can really help a sale along. There's some benefit to that being visible to the public, in certain cases where there's an item of interest to several potential buyers. Considering sellers are paying for the privledge to use that board...

Let me start first by giving you a Welcome to Bladeforums.

I urge you to read the FAQ section thouroughly, so that you may familiarize youself with the "Do's and Dont's of the site and hopefully avoid any future problems. Also take the time to read all "announcement" stickies posted at the top of each forum, so that you may familiarize yourself with the expected behavior and any additional rules for that particular forum.

If you click on the yellow square in the post you were warned for, you will see a description of your offense and the moderator who issued it.
Moderators here are not "anonymous" and are very lenient in their actions and only issue warnings, until a member repeatedly becomes a problem then an infraction resulting in demerit points is issued. At 50 points an unruly member is automatically banned by the forum software.

Members not wishing to purchase an item are expected to take their questions, chatting and such to Email or PM, so as not to unecessarily clutter up sales threads. With a forum with as much traffic as this one gets, it is easier for both seller and buyer to not have chatter in the thread. This helps to facilitate the issue at hand....Sale of the Item.

The moderator who issued your warning is very experienced and well respected. He absolutely does not "act without thinking" or "censure for pleasure". You broke clearly stated rules, which you are responsible for reading. If you have questions about the rules, ask a moderator or post your question in S&S, we are all here to help members as well as helping keep the place tidy.

Just don't sweat it, Tippet, As Spark said "It's only a warning"

sweat what? I forgot what we were talking about.

Have you seen the Case black pearl damascus? thinking of getting one for my old man, he asked for a new Case.

I think that if he's expecting a plain yellow handled Case and he gets that knife instead, he'll poop a cinderblock.

yeah that's what I'm hoping. They make that toothpick in abalone with real nice bolsters too, I don't know if he's ready for damascus

Well, thanks for humoring me guys I'm glad to be back to my normal helpful & inquisitive self. And shalom, Esav...
