Id really like to try stroping. I have the leather, I just need the compound. Where can I get compound locally? I have heard they carry it at hardware stores, but am unsure of exactly what to look for (I haven't seen anything that specifically says "stroping compound")

You can try Lowe's, Home Depot, Harbor Freight, etc. It is actually metal polishing compound or jeweler's rouge. I use green mostly, it is chromium oxide. You can get black or red as well, it is not as fine as the green though. Hope this helps.

in my local hardware store they didn't have the green stuff, so i bought gray tripoli.

before that i bought a stick of red jeweler's rouge and found it to be too fine to start with. i never use it now except for on my buffing wheel when polishing soft metals.

the tripoli has worked great for me, i even loaded it on to a hard buffing wheel to break the burr before i hand strop.

Sears has the Green Compound. My local Sears is a small mom and pop type place, so I ordered it online and they shipped it there free. It was only 2.50, so not a bad price.

So I picked up some compound at my local ACE. I got what they called Emery. they had the tripoli, but the dude said that was for plastic, and they have the jewelers rouge but I've heard people say that's too light for them. Is the emery ok? Ive never heard anybody say anything about it. Anyway I'm not sure about how I should apply it to my leather strop. It tried rubbing it on, but it just gets a little in a small spot. Is there some method I should try, or is this basically what I'm supposed to be doing?
