Well I was at the movies tonight seing Ocean's Eleven and hoping to catch the Spyderco scenes. Me and about eight friends sat in the back row. About 10 minutes into the movie this guy's cell phone starts going off a seat away. Afterthe third separate call, he changed the ring tone and made it ring again. I turned over and said "Would you please turn off your cell phone?" and my friend next to me said "Don't you know where the power button is?" So the guy says something like "Shut up c*cks*ckers" and my friend called him a name. Then the guy got up and came over to stand right in front of me and pulled a folder out iof his pocket and palmed it and held it out a little ways from him and we sat there and I said "Dude, chill out." and he put the knife away and my friend said "Dude just sit down".
This got the guy really pissed off and he slapped my friend in the face and said "You wanna f**kin start somethin', nigger?" (my friend isn't black, he's brazilian). And by that time everyone in the next couple rows had turned around and a guy stood up and yelled at the violent dude. So he turned around and went to his seat and I stood up and said "I'm going to get security"

So I went and got the security guys and the dude dropped the knife under the seat and denied everything. One officer detained him while the other went and looked for the knife. Then the cops arrived and we filled out witness reports and the cops were really cool about it. One of 'em eagerly showed off his Streamlight Stinger to me upon request. Not to sound haughty, but I'm not even gonna ask if I did the right thing. Even though the guy was my size, I think it would've been a bad idea to try anything. The way things went, the situation was taken care of without any sort of retaliation. Also nobody was seriously harmed.

well i just thought this was a good story. it kinda pissed me off cuz it gives knife guys a bad name. My friend is pressing charges so hopefully this punk'll think about it next time he tries a cheap trick to show off.

Yeah, good move. Outlaw bad guys, not knives. The sooner he gets the idea, the safer it will be for the rest of us to carry our toolkits! If you got into it with him, the police would have ended up arriving to take you away, too.

Did they ever find his knife?

That situation was exceptionally handled, in my opinion. You avoided any violence in a public place, stripped some punk of his knife, and hopefully gained a new little knife in the process. :D

Hey guys, thanks for the nice comments!

Unfortunately, not only did the police confiscate his knife after they found it, but it wasn't worth anything anyway. It looked like a Sean and Odell special as far as I could tell.

Ocean's 11 is a pretty good movie. I saw it today. I don't remember seeing any Spyderco's in there though. The only knife scene I remember was when they cut the ropes in the elevator shaft. You couldn't see the knives though.

Great Job Snow.
Staying cool was the way to go.

Snow, sounds like ya did everything perfect.
Even "experts" can't claim 100% positive results when dealing with an a-hole armed with a cheap-o knife, so your decision not to try anything with the guy was a smart one.

I have to say that this is another reason why law abiding citizens should be allowed to carry handguns, with optional suppressors.

The suppressor would have come in handy in the theater, as your fellow moviegoers would have appreciated your consideration in not annoying them with a loud series of pops, followed by another series of pops (after you reloaded).

Way to go, Snow!
:D

PS - Moving this to General, cuz it's more appropriate there.

I thought this was gonna be a another tactical one type post.

then after your realistic sane response I knew it wasn't.

I find it amazing that someone first could be such an A$$hole in a movie theater then pull a knife out. for what purpose if you had a gun you could a shot him and called it a day. it is amazing what people do.

A++!!! You handled the situation with virtually zero effort on your part and no-one got injured. Highly skillful, in my book. As for your friend, being able to take a slap in the face and brush it off as if nothing happened shows a certain resolve and control of ego that many never attain.
It is said that a true warrior has the ability to choose violent means...others are condemned by it.

Let me add my well done to the almost universal expressions of support given you, Snow, by your fellow members of the Knife Community.

Well done,
bug

Snow,

Nice job!

You kept your self-control, didn't let the situation escalate, and got help. Many people have trouble keeping their egos out of a conflict. They usually end up dead or injured because of it.

Self-control (read: emotional control) is the truest mark of a warrior. Consider yourself a warrior. You've earned it!

Best,

Brian.

It needs great coolness and self confidence to stay calm in such a situation and take a slap and yet evaluate your chances and, instead of rushing in macho-like (read "idiot"), to take the correct (and responsible) steps to defuse a dangerous situation without nobody getting harmed and securing a dumb a**hole to justice.
Sun Tsu said "A great general fights a hundred battles and wins them all. The real genius wins the war without ever fighting".

Just a "cheap knife" makes sense, if it was a good knife like a Spyderco i would bet he would have just shut off his darn cell phone, i hate those darn things.

Way to go Show is right, you handled it perfect, that dummy had no sense in the first place or manners, pulling a knife and not using it is fool hardy, dumb all the way to jail where he belongs.

Cheers!
James
