I figure halibut is at least as good as money for infi? FYI the one in the middle topped out at 189 3 others broke 80. Wife and I got the 4 halibut to the right of the big guy and landed the king salmon up top. Also took a lingcod each with one going over 40. Nice fish, great captain. Everyone limited out 1 guy on salmon too. Highly reccomend them to anyone thinking of halibut fishing. Here's one with the wife I tried and tried to get her to lift her lingcod.

Nice fish . I never fished for halibut do they put up a good fight?
How long did it take to land that big one ?
 
It took about 25 minutes for the big guy. He was landed on the lightest tackle. Most places use 65-80 pound superbraid and standup rods. One of the 60 pounders was caught on 20 pound test fishing for silvers and took 30 minutes. They fight pretty good a lot like catfish, but I was surprised that the biggest ones were all caught on jigs (24 oz).

What were they, about 300 feet deep? That's a long way to lug that big one back to the top! :thumbup:

Awesome catch! Did you clean them with a Battle Mistress?

I offered the cap'n my SJT, but he just went to work with his rapala fillet knife. He filleted those fish quicker than I could ever had hoped to. Hopefully when I get back I can get out salmon shark fishing. Yes a nice fillet knife is in order!

While I still have my eye on one of those 6" D2 Busse fillet knives, my favorite so far is a Dexter-Russell "Sani-Safe" 8" knife. Has a nice fine edge and stays sharp. I like my Rapala/Martini and my Gerber fillet knives, but the Dexter Russell is the best I've tried so far. BTW, I cleaned all the fish in the above pic. Bought a vacuum sealer for freezing the fish and absolutely loved how easy it was to put them up.

That one on the far right some type of trigger/surgeonfish? I have never thought of eating one of those, it looks like it came out of an aquarium!
 
beefangusbeef, man that's some serious fish. Cool pics. Guyon, what knife is that sitting on the sawhorse, second from the left. It's in the sheath with the silver looking chape. It sort of looks like a Basic style handle but based on the sheath I'm guessing it's something else.

Trigger fish. I was the only one that caught a trigger fish this trip. I'm told they're pretty good eating. Tough to clean...scales like armor, skin like leather. Basically had to cut around the perimeter of the fillet, skin the fish with pliers, then finish filleting it out. Nice big chunk of meat from both sides though.

That one is a Gerber. Actually a very sharp fillet knife with a comfortable grip. Not too expensive either.

Bought a set of three Dexter-Russells when Bass Pro had a sale recently. One of them is a 9" serrated fillet knife. That thing really helped on the bigger fish, just in terms of cutting through bones in the rib cages.
 
Triggerfish, once considered trash fish on the Gulf Coast, are outstanding table fare.
