Checking out the Exchange here on BF (Gold/Platinum Members as well as Dealers sell on the Exchange, Buying open to ALL)
Attending a Knife Show where Dealers are in attendance, some shows (Bade 2012 as an example) the Hinderer Herd will be there and the Lottery is a great opportunity.
To simply describe what to look for and what to avoid still leaves a lot open to problems.

Simply spend a little time looking at the pics here and on the official site. Once you know what true XMs look like, the fakes are easier to spot.
Rubi nailed it on some of the best ways to get a real one.
We have No tollerance for fakes here, please tread lightly.

The way this has been dealt with on a popular watch forum and works quite well is a dedicated thread - (insert item/brand here) Fake Busters.
questionable item photos are posted and the experienced forum members cast their opinion - run for the hills, or looks good.
Also sage advice is given, photos of genuine items are no gaurantee but it is a usefull resource to help buyers.
It could be a usefull resource for the general area and keep it out of the Hinderer forum.

Enjoy! Don't panic when you notice day turning to night as you sit and admire your new treasure.
Just remember to drink eat and visit the bathroom on a regular basis.
