Brought on by Bladite's lightsaber thread I think.

I'm trying to write some books (gonna finish one in a year or so-I swear) and I'm tinkering with a Star Wars book, made a new race of people that use lightsabers, now a thought popped into my head:

A lightsaber is a energy weapon right? the "blade" is a form of contained energy,so this means-no weight blade wise yes?
SO HOW IN GOD'S NAME DOES THE THING BALENCE????????
I know,only a knife/sword nut would think of this :D

Ok, I am a vicarious nerd of Star Wars because I really enjoy the video games, but you have to sift through a ton of fanboy stuff to get to anything that helps you progress through the game.
Here's what I have heard:
The lightsaber is a weapon that is best used by those with a strong connection to the Force, Light or Dark. While a lightsaber can be weilded by someone with no connection to the Force, it is dangerous because we require physical gravitational ques to to place things in our minds eye that our outside our field of vision.
A Jedi or a Sith feel where the "blade" is going by a Force connection. It does not balance so to speak as it is a lethal extenion of the Force from their body.
Now, there is the argument of how Grevis (sp?) can use lightsabers fairly well as he is mostly droid. It probably has to do with him being a cyborg. However, he uses no Force Powers and relies on overcoming Jedi with his droid speed and 4 arms wielding multiple sabers. He was also a pretty tough cookie until Windu damaged his lungs with a crushing Force Push. Now his Guard has lightsaber like staffs, but they are mostly made of material other than light. They are also made of one of the few materials that cannot be cut by a lightsaber.

So in other words...use the Force, Luke;)

Electro-magnetism....with enough concentrated energy there would be mass. E=MC2

So the light saber is actually tip heavy..

Darn what am I talking about ??

they are also made using hard light generators (ref. the 'doc' in voyager) so they can be used to parry. as the blade is weightless, the handle & it's electronics are constructed with components placed to compensate and give the correct feel. the gravetic generator and it's mini black hole's inertial dampers is especially useful to balance out the blades energy mass and the hard light generators anti-matter power source along with its reverse and 4th diminsional inertial forces. simple when you know the secret innit?

oh, forgot to say that the gravity lens generated by the mini-black hole is, of course, used to adjust the length and focus of the blade, so must have a certain range of movement, tho not enough to seriously shift the balance.

ref: the mk I mod III 'patton' light sabre, milspec 100-3465-121-111/a or /b,

classified material. for jedi initiates, technicians speclev 2 and above only.

HUH ??

Aah, Jake, isn't it great. Everytime my ass hits the couch I hear it. "Honey..." Daggumit!!! Wait till you have a kid. Then its "Daddy..." Unfortunately thats usually followed by, "...come wipe my butt." Every time my fingers hit the keyboard too. Dagnabbittttt!!!!

The Light Saber is balanced by the play between the light and dark side of " The Force" It gathers the light side of the force to itself and is contained and balanced by the dark force which is surrounded and contained by it . Please don,t ask more questions as I would be revealing The "Sacred Secrets" of the Jedi and I would have to silence you forever ! L:O:L

P:S: If you really want to know more send $25,000 dollars to ............. .
I own the copyrightsfor the "Sacred Secrets"of the Jedi and would make you a light Saber for $50,000 .

P:P:S: George Lucas will be releasing the final episode of "Star WArs" It will be released in the year 3003 and will be called "Return of the "Sacred Secrets" of the Jedi." L:O:L

I'm almost sad to say it, but this has been debated a few times on SFI. The general concensus is that such a weapon would balance like crap.

This does explain why (usually) only Jedi used them in the first place, though; most other folks simply would not be able to work one effectively without hurting themselves.

Throughout their early history, the Sith preferred more conventional melee weapons, suitably modified to provide performance similar to a true lightsaber. They continued to use such weapons in various quantities long after the lightsaber came into vogue. It's said that the Sith used actual swords rather than lightsabers on account of the more visceral type of combat they provided, but some think that this preferance may have been based on their better balance and handling as well. Both sorts of weapons were rather popular amongst skilled users during the reign of the Old Republic, as they were not affected by personal shielding, as most ranged weapons were, and for at least some of its history, all Republic soldiers were trained in melee combat and issued swords in addition to blasters. By the time of Episode I, the Old Republic was dying and logistical difficulties were probably responsible for the notable lack of melee weapons outside of Jedi and Sith use.

Please don't ask me how I know all this, as I can assure you that I didn't play "Knights of the Old Republic" all the way through several times. And I most certainly didn't end up on the wrong side of the Force nearly every time.

REPLY : DAVE , Dave step back into the light ! L:O:L

P:S: if you read my previous post you will see they are balanced by the play between light and dark . Its a Yin-Yang thing ! The only place a light saber won,t work is in the center of a black hole . Then the dark side takes over and the saber collapses in upon itself .

Spoken like a true Jedi slave.

Stop parroting their archaic foolishness, Kevin, and start understanding the Force the way it was meant to be known. You have nothing to lose but your chains and your ignorance. Might is its own reward. I...

err...

Nevermind.

One of the reason's I asked is what the hell are we gonna do if we make a real lightsaber?-you wanna test it? I don't!!

Sure, Bring that sucka on! Don't you have to be pure of heart or sumthin?
Would you believe I've never seen all of the Star Wars movies and actually think some of them pretty dumb? ;) A true Cherokee Warrior isn't afraid of any weapon, that is as long as it's held by the enemy and not one of the Cherokee women. :thumbdn: :grumpy: :o :foot:

Very funny man! :D

What scares me about it though is losing track of the "blade"....no weight and it might get hard to remember where it is!

Plus it must put out some real heat so you could get it too close and singe off yer eyebrows! :D

REPLY :I have my own theories as to the "pure of heart ".

While I wouldn,t want to face a truly P:O:ed woman with a weapon in her hand I might make the exception for a Pretty Woman !

Thems fightin words !
(This is where I go "Oops , I better not let my mouth get myself into something my feet might not get me out of ! ")

Ahem.... I have moved on from the actual useage of any "edged weapon" . While people may not consider a ligfht saber an edged weapon per se I can tell you there is no sharper blade . A light saber is the line between light and dark I can assure you there is no keener edge .
I have no need of such physical contrivances . They are for Jedi Knights in trainig . I do not use the force . I am the force .
