Real tool or made for a fool?

Mi amor just sent me a picture of this thing she found at her workplace. I found it amusing, thought it could perhaps even make a good tool on the face of a mountain, but my spidey senses were tingling, at a folding hatchet, like, what? Anyone know if this is a usable tool or junk or somewhere in between?

Its a really good paper weight.

What I was thinking as soon as I see the hatchets and hammer. I do not mountain climb, but even still, what is one doing? Hacking one cord so they swoop across the mountain face and hammering in another spike at the right moment to avoid falling rocks and commie rounds like Macguyver?

She gets some funny stuff where she works - most poor quality, occasionally some absolutely insane stuff.

Its not meant for climbing. I wouldn't bring a hatchet climbing...and the "hammer" would probably fall apart after the first piton (spike you hammer into cracks).

I'm sure it's a good nutcracker.

Look how round the Phillips driver is. That's how you know when you're dealing with some real top tier high quality equipment.

Yes, that thing is clearly unsafe. Unfortunately stuff like this tends to be categorized and pushed as outdoor and preparedness gear, when in reality it's best taken on an intrepid journey to the garbage dump. That's where it's going to end up, hopefully without getting the opportunity to send someone on an adventurous trip to the emergency room.

G Guy McVer That one really made me laugh, "adventurous trip to the ER" 😂

Yeah, luckily this one has a chance to be destroyed since any donation with a knife must go to corporate in this branch, as a "weapon". She sends me pics of all the interesting donos and knives just so I can check 'em out, laugh, or admire, whichever the case may be.

Luckily also, the place is lax about personal knives as nobody thought anything negative about her "I LOST MY KNIFE!" reaction when a jacket in a rack snagged a Sage 5 clip from her pocket, ha.

I'd like to see a video of the thing being used. Specifically chopping some wood and hammering a dozen nails. Nothing crazy, like 4 inch branches.

The geometry of that thing is scary. It appears to me that by holding the thing "backwards" in order to use the fold-out tools, the hatchet blade would be pointing at, if not pressed against, your arm.

These types of hammer based multitools have been around for many years, so someone must be buying them.

Some will be more solid than others and they provide some extra tools, in addition to the main ones, the hammer and axe. Definitely not a premium or hard use multitool, but it will be better than nothing.

That just proves that “there’s a sucker born every minute”.

I would argue that a hammer/axe that’s not durable is worse than nothing, because it’s an impact tool and it’s most likely to fail at the worst possible time-on impact.

Mi amor gave me one for Xmas a couple of years ago, so I’m not allowed to comment.

It came with a sheath for the hatchet, though.
