Real tough sword

I remember that clip - or one like it. The blade is a Japanese piece, but really - any properly made sword - or knife, actually - will do that.

SOG Knives used to have an ad with their Tigershark model cutting a bullet in half. I believe it was a lead .45acp round. It was pretty interesting.

Anything will cut a measly .45 lead round. Even a butterknife that has any kind of hardening should be able to handle that....the video that interests me is one i posted a while back, where a katana takes at least 10-15 direct edge hits from a .50 cal anti-tank machine gun before first delaminating its layers, then breaking.

10-15 direct hits from a .50bmg would be very interesting. Not sure what real-world application it would have in testing the toughness of the blade.

Ghost Soldier, you're probably right, but it's an impressive video nonetheless.

Lagarto

Almost none other than shock absorbing.....anything mildly hard will cut soft lead....especially at those speeds....you could probably cleave a hunk of lead thats travelling at 4000fps with just about anything......the energy transferred to the blade shouldnt be huge until that edge starts degrading.....

I would rather a knife that can cleave a 2x4 with knots 3 times then shave hair......

The most interesting thing about the .50 video as a maker was the blade fracture....it revealed many, many layers, as if the sword were laminated around a core of some other steel....

Here is the video:

That is exactly how real katanas are made. The real ones, that are traditionally made actually have different steel through the core, along the sides , along the spine and on the edge. Hardest is on the edge for edge retention and cutting ability while the others are to various degrees softer steels for toughness / durability.

this stupid vid again...
Parlor trick. Not saying it's not especially impressive, but quite pointless.

It is especially impressive because standard M33 ball ammunition is not lead... they are a steel slug with a little lead weight in the front all enclosed in a full metal jacket and will penetrate 8mm of armor plate at 500 meters. The armor pierceing rounds use a hardened tungsten steel slug instead of plain steel for the bullet core and will penetrate 19mm of armor at 500 meters.

SOG still has that video or maybe its the same thing, but with a different knife. If you watch the whole intro to their site it is at the end. Just cant remeber what knife it was and dont feel like watching it again

My GInsu knife has sliced .50 bmg uranium depleted rounds in half.:jerkit: :jerkit:

Wasn't the sog that cut the 45 in half an older Trident?

It looks like a "Cold Steel" video to me. They need to whack some cardboard and some ribs with the sword to complete the sequence.
