Went into the mountains for a bit this week to get some wood...

Scenery was great...

Made some new friends who originate from Alaska...

They had some original native ulu's , so I had to get some photo's. These are NOT the gift shop type. Very thin and sharpened only on one side. They tell me that handsaws are the preferred material for the blade stock.

The power in these knives comes from the ability to lock your wrist and push, unlike a traditional knife which typically uses the action of the wrist for cutting power. Natives learn to use the one sided edge to cut in curves....

You know, that little pool and scene looks very familiar to me, what stream is that?

Nice lookin ulus.

Very cool, never used an ulu, but I've used an axe in a similar manner and quite like the idea of it.

So you gonna have a go at em Mark? 1/16" L6 oughtta make a heck of a kitchen slicer:thumbup:

Awesome. Thanks for sharing that. When I get up there one of these days you are going to have to take me to that spot.

I have been watching native women clean fish with those for years. The speed and skill they have is amazing.

The scenery is on the South fork of the Kaweah river on private property. Not to far from Shatner's Ranch...

I might try a few of these some day....
