Real Work Knives

that article was really cool, I only wish it had been longer and more in-depth. I will be looking for this woman's work....

an article written by a liberal, about a woman knife collector, and in Slate Magazine. Enough to put one off, right there.

Using the word "liberal" puts this thread in jeopardy of eventually being moved to the political forum if someone takes the bait. I hope that won't happen.

When I posted the link, I mentioned that my reason for doing so was because SLATE was "anything but an outdoor website." In essence, I posted the link for all the very reasons that might "put one off." I think its a positive thing that people who might be different than me can also see the "good" in knives. What could be wrong with that? More importantly— what the heck is wrong with a "woman knife collector"??? Really?

cool article, and the http://www.themacheteproject.com/ site are pretty cool as well. Reminds me a bit of some of the photos the ESEE guys have of old rats that are super worn. Or some of the EDC pics on the traditional sub.

Mannlincher, pretty closed mind there. You might have at least looked over the article before rejecting it so completely, or at least taken another forumite's word on its overall value.

well damn.

No, I'm not taking the bait except to say that I am a liberal, and so are most of my friends, and most of them are outdoorsy, and many are women, and most actually use knives for one reason or another. However, I am probably the only one obsessed with accumulating more of them. If someone wants to diss my opinions on knives, he or she would be dissing almost 60 years of experience. This is a short article, but a good one, about someone (A WOMAN!!!) interested in actual working knives and the people who actually work with them. In fact, it is so short I wanted to keep reading, but it ends too soon. It wouldn't hurt anybody to read it instead of smarting off.

Manlicker would have a stroke to meet my friend (woman) who runs her family's 3 generation old farm in which she uses GASP her grandfather's old corn knife and employs a lesbian or two as hands.

Crom, we may differ from time to time on issues, but you should strive for spelling accuracy, to keep from looking so challenged.

You throw blinders up to quick my friend. Wisdom can come from the unlikeliest of places.

Not a chance. I could remove or infract the offending post, but moving the whole thread? It still wouldn't belong in the Political Arena, especially with Registered Users here.

I didn't notice any spelling errors in Crom's comment.
How about the first word (name)? Not funny.

Lets focus on the topic, and avoid personal remarks.

Well it was interesting to see someone's prospective on blades changed by getting out of their bubble. The photos and descriptions are interesting. I find it kind of sad that this "collector" is taking this knives out of use, though I'm sure the money she provides is welcome. I'm more of a user than collector personally so that's my point of view. The assumption that we all view machetes as weapons (I can only assume she means western culture in general) is a little off putting. I've met numerous folks in my area who understand what a machete was made for, and it was never intended as a weapon. A lot of positives about this article though, hopefully it changes the perspective of others as well.
