Real world defensive use of a knife

There is a lot of talk on this board about the use of a knife for self-defense. Have any of you actually deployed your blade to save your life?

Dude, if that means what I think it does, I did not need to see that. Keep it sheathed...

Back on topic;

Yes, I have. Or maybe not. I don't know for sure. I survived though, and my knife made it easier. I don't know if I would have lived or died without it.

On the flip side I've had knives/edged weapons deployed against me too. That sucks. Doesn't really hurt though, it's more like "whoa, where the hell did all that blood come from?".

Yeah, I've noticed that there's a whole lotta "real world" tactical wonderboys and martial artists out there who've never been in a real scrap, yet alone one their "edged weapons encounters". Something about that stinks...

I'm sorry snickersnee. I don't play around in the tactical forums, but a post here in the general forums seemed like fair game. Anyway, I'll be more careful in the future.

I don`t carry a knife for self defense. I`ve never deployed a knife under any type of threat or in anger.

That being said, if the question is WOULD I use a knife to defend myself, the answer is yes. I`d use a knife if I had it. I`d also use a lamp, or a flagpole, or a crowbar, or a pointed stick, or anything else at my disposal that might preserve my sorry a$$..!!

I think someone here has a signature line that sums up my feelings about this. It`s a quote of Thomas Jefferson (I think) that goes something like "men like to collect arms but hope to never use them..." Something like that. You get the idea.

Paracelsus,

I wouldn't worry too much -- I laughed at your blade deployment joke...a sense of humor on the forums is a good thing...

Paracelsus, I meant that in the way that when someone says something and the other thinks it's kinda funny but gross, if you follow... I guess I shoulda put in a smiley. I often use ... to symbolize a humerous thought or intention, but also when I want someone to extrapolate on something I said, if that makes sense...(I'm using it in both ways in this last sentence.)

It's not my place to say wether or not you can crack a joke about something or not, or where you're allowed to post jokes. So in other words, I took no offense at the statement, thought it was kinda funny, but don't like the mental image of another guy's schlong hanging out...(this would be a

usage of "..." )

Two "chase off" incidents here. In both cases the assailant(s) backed down from the threat. Both times I was carrying megafolders.

No blood, no cops, no worries. That's the best defensive use possible and why I prefer BIG blades.

Hello,

I think pulling any type of weapon without using it is a Dangerous proposition.

The old line of " Hey these guys Jumped me and all i did was pull my blade and they Ran off" is just Silly. If i am carrying a knife and i feel i am threatened
to the point i need to Deploy said Blade, Gun, ect.. then I am going to do my very best to make sure my assailant doesnt have the Opprotunity to Assault anyone else in the future.

In Fact Using a weapon as a Means of Intimidation to a threat is against the law.
Its called BRANDISHING and is a no no!

The best type of Knife fighting(which is actually a bad term, since knives dont fight)
is one where your assailant doesnt know he is in a knife fight until he is already Bleeding out.

I myself will never pull an edged weapon or gun on anyone that i dont intend to legally and justafiably KILL, Period!!

I have been Assualtd in a little town we have in spokane called HILLYARD which is known as a Biker and No good hang out spot for the Mentally and Criminally challenged in my town. I was TOLD that if i didnt do this or that that i was going to be Cut up,
Yes i was carrying a blade, yes i was prepared to use it,,but i didnt have to due to the fact that they didnt produce a Weapon or so iminate intent on causing me Harm,
ie.. sudden threatening movement, display or Weapon Ect.. I didnt have to display a weapon myself to alliviate the Threat.
But i did inform said partys that if they Pursue this to the end that it might Cost all partys involved more than they are willing to commit, ie.....There LIFE.

In the end I continued my shopping and was left with a higher respect for myself , than if i would have freaked out and acted as a criminal element myself.

Yep, Syderco Endura kept a bat from connecting with my cranium many years ago. I ago that it was by far one of the worst experiences in my life.

In 98, I came home after work to find a burglar in the process of robbing my home. Standing 10 ft. away from me, he pointed a small snub-nosed revolver my way and muttered, "I'm going to kill you." Instinctively, I unsheathed and withdrew my Hartsfield knife. The next thing I know, the burglar runs out the front door. The police later concluded that the burglar's gun was probably a toy. The knife that is going to help you in a life-threatening situation is the one that you are carrying.

Allen Blade,

I'm sure you know this, but it may be worth repeating. If you are attacked, you are justified in using force to defend yourself only as long as the attack continues. If your attacker sees your knife and runs, thats OK. If you chase him, you are now, legally, the attacker, and your action is no longer self defence.

Disclaimer: (1) I have not been in any kind of a fight sense I was 14! (Almost 35 years). (2) I do not intend to get into fight in the next 35+ years. (3) I am not an attorney, nor am I in law enforcement.

Mine was about a 1".

MNH, thank you, that was part of my point.

The main controvery here though is "should the guy know you've drawn". Two comments:

1) IF the assailant(s) attack with non-gun weapons, you can be close to certain that if they had guns, they'd be out by now. Against a gun, I find myself agreeing with Alan that your cutlery should be a surprise. Against other stuff, I'm less certain. See, a draw *before* combat is engaged is more "reliable" than one attempted in the "heat of battle"...this goes double for folders but applies to FBs too.

2) Complicating matters, in California you can't conceal an FB so doing a "sneaky draw" is even more problematic. And back when I had both my "chase-off" incidents, you had to open-carry megafolders.

Upshot: both times when I was threatened with "club-class weapons" (hammers and large wrench) the sight of my folders caused 'em to back off. I personally know of other chase-off incidents; it happens often enough that the possible practicality cannot be entirely dismissed.

I have never been in a knife fight and hope it stays that way.
In terms of legal aspects, the laws seem to vary greatly from state to state. MNH got it right and in his example, it is rather obvious that once you start chasing someone, you've become the attacker. A less obvious scenario would be if you get into a fight with someone who is attacking you with a knife. Assuming you can manage to wrestle the knife away from him (maybe you're skilled in CQC or martial arts), then you cannot use his knife to stab him. On the other hand, should you be able to get a hold of his knife arm and bend it enough to where his knife stabs himself in one fluid motion, you're in the clear. In either case you'll be in for some paperwork, but it help if the other party can't dispute your testimony.
