Imagine...TSHTF...

All is lost...pandamonium everywhere...electricity is sporadic...

No basic services...things are about as ugly as they can get...

But you are packed in tight...your bunker is fortified...well stocked...

and you are sheltered in place..waiting it out...

A knock at the door...revreals a long time friend...she is a young single mom with two small kids...she is lost...looking for help from you...

Please let me in...she cries...her kids are hiding behind her...looks like they haven't eaten or slept in days...

What do you do?

SHane

Let them in and provide for them as best I can. If I'm well-stocked in a nice bunker, 3 more people wouldn't hurt. And even if I weren't well-stocked, I couldn't say no to an old friend, especially with hungry kids!

Chris

There will come a time when you can't 'let them in' because the number exceeds your safety, the numbers will climb until all are destroyed and no one survives.

I suppose you could throw a weapon and three day supply of food out to the woman if you did not wish to let her in.

I would let her in. I'd be afraid of the next time, or the one after that, when I couldn't let them in.

It would be nice to collect all the people and band together. But how can a few isolated survivors feed the millions from the city who are not prepared?

This is just one of the reasons why when faced with the prospect of the end coming, most folks just say, 'I hope I go in the first blast'.

take them in of course, no man would want to survive alone.

I was wondering who would say that first. Expected it to arrive in conjunction with fate of mom, though.

I hate 'Sophie's Choice' questions....

We have serious thread veer now:

My son's and I play a game called; 'which one of you would the Cougar like to eat the most?"

Now, Carter is the oldest, but he is skinny as a rail. I tell him the Cougar would get half way up the slope before realizing there was very little meat on him.

Now Trav, he'd be a good cracker. He's thick and heavyset, and has a gut. But probably the best eating.

Keith, well, he's not as large as Trav, but he is thicker than Carter, so I suppose he'd make a great mouthfull. "Darn, I wish I had more of these to eat" thought the hungry Cat.

Oh- and my kids all think I'd taste terrible to the Cat.

How did she happen to locate your bunker? If she knows about it, who else knows you've got a hoard of food and water? "TSHTF", "Pandemonium everywhere", and you get up to go answer a "knock at the door"? What the heck, I reckon buzzards gotta eat too.

Sarge

would be kinda hard to hear a knock on sarge's 18" thick battleship armour door now wouldn't it? or did he leave the gun port open again?

p.s. why did y'all instantly assume the two kids were human? there is another definition y'know. baby goats are right tasty....those who thought first of human children are obviously unsuitable role models ;)

i'm sure the lawyers amoungst us would never assume facts not in evidence.

Hey, Shane. GREAT to see you here.

You did say "friend", right?

That means she can come in.

I was gunna say the kids are tender.........

In that situation I'd let her in. If she left she may tell others where your bunker and stash are located. The next visitor I'd shoot. She'd have to learn to pull her own weight. Survival is hard work, and myself, my wife and children would be working too, so she'd have to do her share. If she began to complain at any point, she has to go. See above about the telling on you. So I guess she gets shot.

SHTF situations are not fun to picture. In the post 911 world you've got to be prepared to get away from the cities. You've got to have a spot prepared in the country. And you've got to be prepared to run it, and defend it. It wouldn't be pretty, and the unprepared would be everywhere. My family would evacuate to Mississippi. Even if we had to walk it wouldn't take more than a couple of weeks. Get away from Atlanta. Be prepared. I've told my wife we'll never move back to Florida. Its unescapable, and filled to the brim with the helpless and clueless. It takes so little to incapacitate S. Florida. And there is a big unsecure port there.

You mean Democrats? Just kidding. I was going to say- 'there's the definition of the modern State."

Ha Ha Ha. I guess you've got your stirrer out today. Good. We need a lively thread over here. LOL.

I meant (and this is going to offend, but I cant help it) the elderly and urban. The elderly because of physical limitations, and necessary medications. The urban becuase they've specialized in metropolitan survival which gets you exactly zilch if the area crashes. Too bad metro sexuals I wouldn't let you into my bunker. I assumed the woman was a competant person. If an urban person with no calouses showed up. Shoot em or be prepared to serve their needs, they won't be any help.

Why would you want to keep living, in even tongue-in-cheek versions of these scenarios?

There are things worse than physically dying. This isn't the only place.

Firstly, because its not your choice to make IMHO. Secondly because of your family. Are you going to decide its just too much and kill your wife and children before offing yourself? Thats a terrible cowardly idea. Life has only recently become all soft and cuddly. Trajedy was a way of life for most of our history. I'd fight to live, personally.

By all means, I'd embrace self-reliance, and I'm not advocating murder/suicide. I agree that's a cowardly approach.

But my personal belief system wouldn't go to the extent of shooting folks who came looking for help either, or turning them away. The big lesson to learn while we're alive in this world is how to do compassion, in my view. It may take more courage to do that, knowing that you've put your own survival at risk by helping other folks. There's a passage in scripture about weeping while you sow grain ... because you know that by sowing the seed grain instead of eating it, you're going to lose some family members to starvation before the harvest comes.

Mine certainly isn't a common viewpoint, and I'm not trying to impose it on you folks. It comes down to what one believes is the "right thing," and for that question, I don't think that there's only one "right answer."
