I can't post this in the appropriate place because of my level of entry. But I mean really the adds that pop up in the margin are mostly ignored by me.

However my grandson was sitting in my lap and grabbed the mouse and clicked on an add in the margin and a hook-up.com site pops up on the screen.

I mean I understand if I up-ed my level of entry to a paid level I don't have too see the adds and I am not some offended prude here but, I come here to learn I don't need my grandson accidentally clicking on a hook-up site where the gal is pulling off her top and saying join me. I don't think we need that kind of advertising!!!

OK I said my O2 and you can take it for what it is worth, your mileage may vary.

I almost don't want to mention this because I know Spark makes money from the advertising but.... AdBlock Plus. It's a free addon for most web browsers that blocks all advertising everywhere. Highly recommended.

You know it wasn't the advertising I was complaining about it was the type of advertising and yes I do know there are some who probably will like that type! Like I said my grandson accidentally clicked on it!

The correct forum for this type of post is Tech Support. I'll move it there. Also note at the bottom of every page is the following text.

There's ad blockers, and you can become a paid member. As much as I and others would appreciate you supporting this forum with a paid subscription, this site is free and the advice is free. People here don't only help others who are paid supporters. That's not what this community is about.

That said, I agree that guests here shouldn't be presented with "adult" ads. However, it's important to realize something about ads on the internet. Many websites that advertise use services that are provided by companies like Google that, simply put, know where you've been. Ads I get when I log into gmail are typically knife or computer/electronic gadget related. Because google knows what I search for, knows what I'm buying, and what I talk about in my emails. I don't know what service(s) bladeforums uses, but it's entirely possible that the ads you see aren't controlled by them, aren't intended by them, aren't known by them. I've seen instances of "adult" ads being found on websites like Disney, Nickelodeon, and Spungebob Squarepants. Unfortunately, that's just the nature of the internet. I've read that 25-35% of internet traffic is related to porn.

Adblock is really your best solution. Besides protecting yourself and any youngsters that you might accidentally expose to unwanted content, it'll improve your page loading speeds and overall web experience. And not just here, but everywhere. The internet is a filthy, vile place. Some things are unavoidable. But you can protect yourself. You will never get complete immunity, but you can reduce the risk.

The best thing is that the ads tend to be based upon your browsing history and cookies... so most of the ads I see are for power tools and exercise equipment

That explains so much as to why I get the umm...umm...ads that I see. :)

Maybe you could frequent the Sesame Street forums over at PBS,

Really, I mean this is the mentality of a ................ you know this site used to a great experience!

If this is the kind of quality membership you get with paid members then more than likely your more than correct, in assuming you don't need me or my money!

Spark, I know this is your site, and I have read what you are talking about at the bottom of the page and I get it. I also know it costs money to run these sites but this has become the most out of control overpaid site I have seen.

Your members seem to think that just because they have paid a fee they can do and say anything. What they need to do is learn is not to say anything on the net that they would not say standing toe to toe with another member. What they are doing is a travesty because you are losing members who used to come here and contribute real knowledge and now this site has become full of a bunch of folks who have paid a fee to show their ignorance! No other knife forum site I am a member of has the problem that this one seems to have!

Oh, ok. Allow me to rebut:

Nobody has a "get out of jail free" card because they've paid money. We've bounced plenty of paid subscribers who choose to break the rules, and we've let plenty of people come back who really didn't deserve 2nd or 3rd chances.

If you think it's overpaid, you are more than welcome to pony up and start your own forum and run things how you see fit. You've been a member here for almost 6 years. You've got 1300+ posts. You've never had a paid membership.

In the meantime, unless you have constructive criticism, your opinion is worth the same as everyone else's. I'm not perfect, and have never claimed to be omniscient, but unless you have some sort of masterful knowledge about our site stats, your analysis about membership & traffic is hilariously wrong.

If you don't like it here, feel free to log out. Nobody's forcing you to be here, just like nobody is forcing you to buy a membership... even after 6 years.

If you run an adblocker browser add-on, you won't see any ads.
