Do think any of you out there could point me in the right direction to finding an idiot’s guide for knife classification? Don’t get me wrong here, I know the difference between a folder and a fixed, but that is about all. I guess the main questions I have in mind deal with the pros/cons of various blade materials and types of grinds. I realize that this is an incredibly broad question, but any help you guys could give a dumbass like me will be greatly appreciated.

The above-mentioned FAQs are worth reading, especially for newbies.

Also use the search feature on BFC and run three searches using the following keywords:

1. hollow flat convex grind
2. best favorite steel carbon stainless
3. best favorite blade shape tanto clip drop point

This should bring up a lot of informative results, pick those that look most on-topic and read 'em.

Welcome to the Forums anewguy. The best thing to do is just hang out in Forums that deal with spefics of what you want to learn about at any given time....

You can learn quite a bit fast if you have the time...

Good luck :)

Thanks again guys for your help. I have read almost all of the faq page and as a bit of a quiz I was looking at my new al mar sere 2000 that I picked up a few days ago. From the little that I know, I think it is a spear point or a modified spear point and I think (more like I guess) it has a sabre grind. Oh yeah, and the blade has vg-10 stamped on it, yet I was unable to find info on this material on the faq page. If anyone knows if this is right and wouldn’t mind “checking my quiz” I would greatly appreciate it. (my knife came with NO instructions/info of any kind with it). Thanks again

You picked up a great knife--one of the most highly thought-of folders out there. VG-10 is a top-rated stainless alloy. It will hold an edge for a long time, and is not difficult to resharpen. Best of luck with it--and--Welcome to the Forums!:)
