Just ran across this YouTube series.. got to step 9 so far.. but really good stuff and knowledge for those w/o a belt grinder or wanted to get into knife making (if I used the right term). First part is a bit of ranting and mostly forging stuff.. but was really neat to see/learn (1-6). Good stuff on draw filing and sanding in the later videos (6-10).

Good stuff. Keeping it simple and old skool. Thanks for posting!

Good how to and no you dont need a grinder to be a knifemaker..Files work just as well just slower..
However...........................
He needs some some serious downtime and possibly bloodpressure medicine...You cannot let anonymous armchair master smiths get to you like that..
I thought a few times he was gonna start bleeding from his eyes

If knifemaking makes him that angry then making dream catchers might calm him down :)

this guy's videos are awesome. i've watched them all. i love the way in his earlier videos he's really polite, but the more recent the videos get the more angry he gets.
he makes some fine knives too :)

He has a lot of other visa too. A series on rr spike tomahawk, forge welding, file work. When I was on my initial information absorbing phase I watched all his videos

He does seem to have some unresolved angst :) Interesting videos though so at least he is willing to back up his words with actions and share some of his knowledge.

:rolleyes:So he goes on a rant about making knives without belt grinders, then uses two of them during the making of this knife?

Funny, I noticed the same thing. He obviously changed his mind during the making of the knife, he just didn't change the title of his Video's!!

yeah - the guy is pretty good, maybe even really good. I have watched a lot of his vids, and definitely learned a good bit.

I wish he didn't get so upset about stuff. He is just going to die younger because someone got under his skin. Seems to be an ok guy, just needs to recognize that disagreement among honest adults is typically a good thing. Certainly, tolerating different opinions is a whole hell of a lot more important than whether one or the other opinion is, "right."

I do like his vids, though. Just have to not let the anger turn me off. He has some good things to teach, and he is pretty good at teaching, too.

A fellow Texan to boot, shame I didn't know about this fellow when I lived in Tyler (about 30-40 miles from him). I would have paid him for lessons back then, for sure (or swept his shop or something, since I didn't have any money).

thanks for sharing the links, I had forgotten about them.

This guy's attitude kills me! haha

Also, while I think he essentially made his point about not "needing" a belt grinder, I think the way he tries to differentiate between a sander and a "grinder" is comical. They're the exact same thing.

Another thing: I don't know if it's just me, but for doing such a fantastic job on the blade, I think he really "short changed" the handle. Looked very blocky and generic to me. making it more elliptical and putting a slight taper in it from the butt to ricasso would have made a world of difference.

IMO- If somebody is going to be that cocky and angry.... they should be able to make a much nicer knife than that while bellowing all that anger.

And all of his "F you! you don't need an f'ing belt grinder!!! F the world!!! I f'ing challenge you to show me I'm wrong you f'er!!!!" turned into instant crap the second he started using a freaking belt grinder in his videos.

If you're going to brag up doing hand work, do it right. Like if you want a sharp transition from bevel to flats, have a good backing for your sandpaper to keep that transition crisp.... don't wrap the paper around your thumb.

I agree Nick

I couldn't watch them all.
I have no tolerance for jackasses.

If he would have cut out the BS, & stuck to technique he could have made half as many videos and may have kept my attention.

Proof is in results, not BS

I think he is in Sandy UT pretty friendly place :) Everyone walks around with a big smile trying to get you to go to church:)

I watched the whole series last night and he really seems to have missed his intended goals by a bit. What I got out of it all was that even a small underpowered belt grinder is pretty friggin handy but forging is next to useless on a knife like that.
