Hi,

I just got a new Gerber LMF II. It seems to be just what the doctor ordered for a hunting/survival knife that I can haul around and use without worrying about destroying a $300-400 dollar knife. Cost me about $80.

It's sharp and seems to hold an edge and the grip is supper nice.

My only complaint is that when I lubed it a lot of the excess black powder coating came off the blade. :barf: I contacted Gerber and they said they knew they had accidentally let a batch of knives ship out before the excess coating was removed sa they are shipping bunches out for military contracts.

Other than that I think it's a fine tool for the money.:D

i own the coyote brown one,i wanted the green version but was really hard to find at the time of there release, one day i'll mess around and pick up a green one....but yes i really like the knife as well.

I use my LMF 2 as a beater knife, but I still really like it and I'm glad I got it.

I like the looks of the LMF too.

Does anyone know if the coyote brown comes in a plain edge version? I've only found the PE in black.

I got mine yesterday but the knife seems a little hard to take out of the sheath...or maybe I'm just too weak :p

I didn't know they made a version in plain edge. I was looking for one too. Do you have a link?

Sorry to get your hopes up john, but you're right, there are no PE LMF II knives.

I was using a product search engine, and looking at the small photos, they looked PE.

I found an old thread though suggesting we should write Gerber asking for PE LMF II and if enough interest is shown, they might do it. I'm going to send them an email later tonight.

Just FYI, this is a blurb about the LMF II from a 2006 SHOT Show report: "Gerber's Mark Schindel showed us a big LMF Tactical knife that he had been ceremoniously presented by a satisfied customer. This particular knife had been used to cut through the fuselage of a downed helicopter, electrical cables and all, to allow the escape of an American soldier under heavy enemy fire. The blade showed some high voltage electrical burns, but was otherwise undamaged, while the insulated handle protected the knife's owner from shock; he continued to use it for the remainder of his tour in Iraq. "

There was a write up on this story and a picture of the soldier and his LMF in an issue of the American Rifleman last year. I've wanted one ever since :)

The Gerber reps at the SHOT Show told me that they tested several steels for the blade by cutting up helicopter fuselage aluminium. 12C27 from Sandvik came out as the winner, cutting more than 3 feet of it and still kept a decent sharp edge.

Thats a cool test.

Hey Guys..

Abiigs..

Do you happen to have a pictre of that knife and the sheath I made ??

I sent it without taking pictures of it...

THanks

I don't know if my thread is the one you are reffering to but I started one some time ago asking if anyone was interested in a plain edge LMF II to give Gerber an email. I have emailed them several times suggesting to them to offer a plain edge as I think it would sell. I was doing that once a month or two. They don't reply to me anymore.

I truly don't undestand why they have a brown version with the ASEK knife, a brown one without the ASEK knife, a green one and a black one but no plain edge. It seems like it would be just a tad cheaper to make since it omits a step in the manufacturing process.

If they offered a plain edge I would have bought one a long time ago but I've gotten to where I view serrations on a knife as practically useless since I can't sharpen them very well and they seem to cause stress risers when batoning them. Plus it just wastes alot of good edge IMHO.

Other than the serration issue I think it is a great looking knife. Sort of remeiniscent of Gerbers from the 80's when they made alot of nice knives.

Here is there contact address: sales@gerbergear.com If any one else would like to see a Plain edge Gerber LMF II please let them know.(Thanks Ludwig) I'm sure with enough potential sales they would be glad to add it to their catalog. Thanks.

Yeah JTC, I was referring to your thread. I was looking up reviews and such on the LMF, saw your idea, and sent them an email. No reply yet.

Like you, I'd only buy one if they were offered in PE. Hopefully they'll see the error of their ways.
