OK folks, I can plead I am the new guy here if this has been posted before, but I could not find it. I am trying to work/con/plead/beg/bribe/threaten my way into the BHIS (Becker Head Inner Sanctum). The godfather Moose said I had to have "some" threads & 25 posts to at least stand before the branding committee, so here goes thread #1:
1) What was it that "made" you buy/look/touch/grab/hold/steal/or confiscate your first Becker??
I have two:
A) Moose's ranting & raving about how these knives were better than sliced bread . . . and
B) The excellent job the "godfather" did on his BK9 with the blade & handle "upgrades".
Now, let's hear yours. Please don't let this first timer have over 1,000 people look at this, & only 50 or so post a comment. If nothing else, say hi to all of the BHIS members, or say hi to this new kid trying to get in, but at least post something !! . . :)

I have posted a little background on why I fell in love with knives... but I don't want to leave this thread hangin all alone in the wilderness of Bladeforums!

I fell in love with knives the first time I saw the original RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD. Those knives were so sexy (and now I know them to be quite corny in construction). At that time I drooled over the Rambo knives and had to have the "survival knife".

As time went on I grew my understanding of what a survival knife IS and ISN'T. The BECKER brand stood in the forefront of style, function, design, construction, steel, and value. I truly believe it's these points that brought me to my purchase of the BK-09, with many more to come (when my money gets right :grumpy: :D ).

I have posted this link before, but it's so FUNNY !!

Hi Just1mor, welcome.

A) Moose's ranting & raving about how these knives were better than sliced bread . . . and

Usually he raves about how these knives were better AT slicing bread.
And logs.
Can't say a log sandwich is my taste, but to each his dentifrice.

I don't recall how I ran across a review of the Camillus BK-11, but it seemed really useful and I had no decent handy-sized fixed blades. I bought a pair.

It was later that I discovered bladeforums, and then inevitably, the BK-2. I was in a knifey mood last winter while stuck at work and decided to fill some gaps.

I've recently asked for a BK-5 for holiday carving. :-)

It will live in the kitchen knife block to fill the gap between the ol' 7" santoku, the seldom-used boning knife, and the surprisingly versatile 4.5" Ikea "thing".

All right, I'll start the show (as usual :D) Smoky Mountain Knifeworks is just up the road a piece, about 25-30min if traffic is moving. I been going there since I was a kid, and they played bluegrass music on the weekends, and cooked kettlekorn on the porch. Yes porch. Fast forward a decade, and it became a huge implement in the knife world. A mecca of sorts for the knife afficianado. Still firmly planted in its Hillbilly roots, it was a great place and one helluva museum. Yes, museum, the world's largest knife museum. I would spend hours wandering around, taking in the sights, and fondling blades that I had never seen before.

Once I become of age to buy, I bought. Many knives and many dollars crossed the barrel head in that place, some of it was mine. This one time, I went on a mission, I had just broken my second Kabar 1217 (batoning) on a rafting trip I made with some of my buds. I broke it on the second day of a 5 day trip, but no worries, I had this "other" knife that I used. So, there to replace a broken Kabar, I was on my way to Kabar's piece of real estate ther, firmly nestled between Buck and a small company you may have heard of, Camillus. While waiting on a person to come over and see to my needs, I was perusing the counter when I saw a very "tactical" looking knife, big, black and odd looking.

When the lady got there to open the doors up, I asked her, "What's this thing?" Oh, those are Beckers, we just got some in, wanna look? Yup. I liked the feel, the look and I was hooked. I spent some time asking steel, owner, maker, reviews, etc. When we finished our conversation and I managed to handle every Becker in the case, which at that time, was all of them. Yes, all of them in the current Camillus line up. I decided on the BK7 as the one I wanted. SO, being the knife destroying junkie that I am, I bought 3 of them. And a Kabar 1217.

I got home, put my 1217 in my pack, put one of the Beckers in the closet, grabbed another one and headed outside. 3hrs and alot of dead green trees, the edge was sharp, I was tired, and the paint had been scuffed, that's all. I beat that damn knife with everything I had, and just short of going Noss on it, I done pretty well.

I started learning more, and getting some real quality time with the Becker BK07, and the more I learned about Ethan, Camillus, and BKT, the more I liked, no bullsh!t knives, meant to take the kind of abuse I usually visit on a fixed blade knife. Fast forward til today, and here I am. Still using them, and actually friends with Ethan, working my butt off making sure that everyone has a chance to hear, hold, use and play with a Becker Knife and Tool designed knifet. Simple goal, convert everyone on the planet to a Beckerhead. I figure it should only take a few months.

I've been holding off on getting one for about 10 years now, but the nice, enthusiastic reviews of the past few months among other things has me about to finally purchase one.

Have always loved the Ka-bar company and liked the attitude and personality of Ethan Becker, both are very important to me.

I was raised by a crazy hillbilly who loves the outdoors and made custom knives now and then, always explained to me the way he looked at tool designs as an engineer and taught me to test everything. His wisdom and my experiences so far would give the Becker designs a thumb up and going with all the years of their recommendations it's too hard to pass up on finally purchasing a few of my own.

The fact that they are priced reasonably for the materials used, which is rare, is a huge factor for me also.

I was looking awhile back for breacher bar mods people had, and at some point someone referred to it as a tiny TacTool. Curiosity lead me to wonder what that was, so I went looking. I thought it was insane, and immediately desired to possess one. I waited until I had a justifiable reason (i.e. something so that the missus wouldn't fillet me when she found out) and I got it.

It was a very useful tool, but is limited in what it can handle well. So I got to looking at other options. The BK7 was my next choice, but after numerous comments made, I decided a BK2 might be a little more inconspicuous. After looking around, I saw how many people absolutely loved it, and I put it on my wishlist on Amazon.

Recently my fiancee' informed me she wanted something, at which point I mentioned that I wanted the BK2, and left it at that. Few days later, we both got what we wanted, and life was grand. Really glad I went with the 2 over the 7, it is in my opinion exactly the right amount of knife.

A few years ago a friend on another forum kept going on and on about his Becker BK-7. I really liked standard Ka-Bars and their 1095CV steel so I tried one and fell in love with it. Then later when I was doing research for an article I got a BK9, then recently after seeing that Ethan had added the tang extension to the BK2 I fell in love with it (had it in the woods out back today doing Mullein experiments), and now I am going to get a BK11.

A friend of mine at work bought a BK2 and gave me a k-bar literature.
Next I went on youtube to see what I could find. NUTNFANCY.
Then I saw the E2E interview with Ethan Becker and thought, that is a hell of a nice guy, I'm going to buy his designs. The BK7 is what started this obsession.

Then the BK2 and now a BK9.

What was it that made me buy my first Becker?

It was my research on wilderness survival where the Becker Brute was mentioned as "THE" best blade for the task. The resulting research led me to this forum and my introduction to the BK9. One of the best things I ever did to date. If I've been good I just might have a BK2 under the tree...

Well, mine also started with the BK7 (Camillus). I was preparing for a nice long backpacking trip pretty deep in the backcountry. I needed a blade that would withstand all necessary camp chores, as well as excel as last ditch defense from any 4-legged critters that may want to get "friendly". I read a review in either T.K. or K.I. (can't remember which), and the author beat the p!ss out of his BK7 and raved on about how tough this knife was. I ordered one, a few days later it was at my front door, and I fell in love. I have since added a BK2, another BK7 (a KaBar one), and a Remora to the fold...along with a few other makers, but this is a Becker thread, right? ;)

Oh, by the way, I still think the blade coating on the Cami's is better than the KaBar...:D

I'll rehash the story if you must:D It may have changed some since the last time I told it.. :D

I had a CS Carbon V SRK that I sold, and was in the market to replace its size at a reasonable price.. Becker fit the bill perfectly with the BK7 it was an inch longer and about as thick.. I didn't think I'd like the handles that much, but man do I.. I'm so glad I gave Becker's a chance, they are no nonsense working man's knives that are built that way..

I bought a BK-7 because of posts in W&SS. After that, I bought a few more.

First Becker was a BK-9. I'd been eyeing a nice chopper for a long time for heavy camp use to replace the Wal-Mart machetes my idiot friends were using to cut firewood (By the way: don't they suck). The research I'd done led me to Becker and the fact I was a fan of the blade shape, design, and Ka-Bar as a company didn't hurt. And the value! About half the price of a Junglas with still excellent 1095 steel, heavy use ready blade with a lifetime warranty? Sign me up. Now I'm on here awaiting until I find some excuse to pick up a BK2 and likely at some point after that an Eskabar or BK7.

My first Becker was my Ka-Bar 1st Generation BK2. After that came the BK9, Then the BK7, the necker, and now the BK5. Don't have the Eskabar, or the Tactool. I was drawn to them because they don't have a huge choil. I hate choils. Most all the other large choppers out there have these huge choils, that push the cutting edge out away from your hand.

Guys, first thanks for all your posts & information. It looks like the BK-7 or the BK-2 seems to be what everyone is using / had used / first purchase / or getting like me. So when this beast finds a home in Ohio come January, do I need to send it to Tenn. to the "godfather" to be blessed ? ? ? :D
Thanks guys, keep posting the info.
Be safe.
