Bought this on ebay thinking that it was a full size 6lb firemans axe that I could fix up and use at work. However when it arrived I found that it is a very small version. It is kind of cool, but I don't know what I can use it for. It is a 2.5 lb head so considerably smaller than the ones we typically use.

I noticed when it came that it had some strange rust chips coming out from inside of the eye. I scraped most of it out, but I was wondering if I need to be worried about this. Any thoughts?

The last pic shows what it looks like with the peelings scraped out. I cant see any cracks.

I bet that thing would be handy as the day is long, re-hafted like a boys axe and thrown in a truck. I'm wondering if that stuff in the eye is old adhesive of some sort. It sure is uniform in thickness. Anyway, for what it's worth, I think it's a cool little project! Not something you see everyday.

I remember those small fireman's axes from school buses. They were mounted next to a fire extinguisher in the front of the bus. Its been awhile since I was in a school bus with those...45+ years.

I like that!!! Hang on to it!! I'd bet that if you had a 6 pounder and that one, you'd reach for that one 9 times out of 10. Course, I've never been a fire fighter, but I can always guess, right.

Quick replies! Thanks!

I hadn't thought of the idea of it being used in a public area or a school bus. That is kind of cool.

You are probably right M3mhis that this would come in handy. I am often wishing that I had a smaller axe to drag around.

t looks like the eye on this is smaller than on my other full size axes. How do you determine what size handle to get? I think 28" handle would be best, but what about eye size?

A standard boy's axe handle is 28" long and the eye is approximately 3/4" X 2 3/16".

If you would rather have a straight handle so that it is easy to use either side of the head, several handle companies offer a 28" straight single bit handle. On the straight handle the eye portion is usually oversized and may require a lot more working down to fit.

That thing is awesome. It's for rescuing dolls from burning doll houses. Big dolls.
