Really trying to talk myself into a combo edge blade…

I have owned a few combo edge knives over the years but always got rid of them quickly. For all the same reasons everyone does.

We’ll, I picked up a couple Leatherman P2’s which are only available with combo edge blades. This is possibly my favorite Multitool (I have about 80% of the Leatherman catalog and a decent amount of Victorinox and Gerbers).

I really want to learn to like these blades. Talk me into it!

I can't talk you into it, because I am not a fan of combo blades.

It works OK on a multi-tool blade, as that is the essence of the tool - options and versatility. But on a knife, I don't want partial serrations. I have lots of knives that are plain edge, and a few that are fully serrated. 95 percent of my knife usage doesn't require serrations. The remaining 5 percent can still be done with a plain edge, although maybe not as efficiently.

If I was cutting rope or fibrous material frequently, serrations are definitely a plus. I don't cut a lot of rope. And if I did, I would use a fully serrated blade.

A lot of my paramedic and LEO colleagues also carry fully or partially serrated blades for the proverbial "cutting seatbelts" duty, but the reality is that a sharp plain edge actually works just as well.

I like serrations for cutting paracord that is frozen or covered with ice, and stripping wire.1/2 plain still allows for fine work. I wouldn’t choose 1/2, but it would not keep me from buying/carrying it if I liked the other features.

Preemptive strike before the haters deny it...🤣🤣

Nice vidya and tunes!
I love the half-serrated edge on my Sidekick, get a lot done with it when I've just had tasks in a pinch. They are associated with cheaper knives, lots of fuel store knives are dual edge, but for some folks who will just throw a cheap knife in the pocket and do not really sharpen, the serrations keep cutting. The event to make me start carrying every day, and as a result I got proper into knives, it was after having to saw down a noose in the woods with my partial edge, fake-wood, assisted mall stiletto from when I was 12, the serrations were the only reason I could, the dagger like grind did not help the old, mystery stainless steel, but it worked and I keep the knife still.

Then, I bought a K55 Mercator.

I never was a fan of combo edges but I bought a Spyderco Stretch XL Combo and like it a lot. The blade is long enough to have 2" of plain edge and 2" of serrated.

I don't like them both in one. But something like this discontinued Dyad with one of each is pretty cool

But really I would just carry knives if I needed a serrated one.

To really benefit from faster /deeper cutting possible with a serrated edge , it needs to be fairly long , IMO .

I don't think it would matter in the end.
Most of the time I carry pe but.
Se has served me well too, if it's sharp and you like it, get it.

I've carried se and combo edge quite a bit in my past. They cut through everything I put them up against.

It's what I bought when I didn't know as much about knives and had shite taste in them. I got a lot of use out of the one I bought, but I'd be unlikely to buy one like it now. I would either buy a fully serrated blade or not at all serrated blade now.

I don't like them on folders, not enough blade length to be useful in my opinion. However, my cousin is a big fan, and I just got him a Spyderco Endela with combo edge for Christmas.

I've never found a real use for serrations, I don't cut rope or any other fibrous material.
