Reaper or Thug?

Out of boredom today I decided to baton some wood with my Reaper and see how it did. I posted this earlier in the picture sticky and mentioned it worked well, as it did.

Before putting it away tonight I decided to scope out the edge with my loupe and see how it did and found a little chip in the belly. I was able to grind and smooth it out in just a few minutes.

I didn't baton more than a couple logs and though the chip was really small I was a bit surprised it was there.
Now, I know the Thug is made of 5160 which is supposed to be "tougher" and thought perhaps it would hold up better.
Or am I simply looking for a reason to buy another knife? Just curious if any of you have them both and what your thoughts are.

What steel is used on the Reaper?

I've used a Hoodlum quite a bit for trail maintenance and have seen no chips.

420 I believe. The Reaper is a good blade, but needs to be thicker stock to win me back.

FWIW- I beat the snot out of my Punk so I would assume the Thug is just as pain tolerant! :D

is the thug thicker and heavier? if it is for wood chopping it would be better with the 5160. they use 5160 for premium axe heads often and for good reason.

The problem is the grind, not the steel. It would be better if they used a sabre grind like they use on the froe.

very true. hollow ground isn't the best choice for chopping wood.

Thank you everyone, I really appreciate the input.
