Reason(s) for using Habaki style bolster?

So are there any advantages/disadvantages in using this? Better fit to the frog or overall a stronger attachment?

Thanks for the thread, I must have missed it. Reading about the subject I couldnt really find any aspect that would be better with the "habaki style", sometimes better fit in the frog but that was about it. Being very very far from knowing anything I am a little bit suspicious about this design. Yvsa wrote in his first reply that the new bolster just covers the tang and not the blade.

Any new info/feedback about this?

The bolster on my 26" Chitlangi (Bura) has a tiny amount of movement; barely a millimeter of movement.

It doesn't seem to affect any functional ability or structural integrity though. The rest of the handle is still secured nice and tight.

I reckon it's just a case of the laha not sealing fully when it cooled and solidified.

I have five H.I.'s and this is the only one with this.

I beat it around against the post and did some power blows into an oak log with it and it hasn't loosened up any further.

So I'm not worried about it.

However, I'm more or less indifferent to the habaki style bolsters. I'd rather prefer the traditional bolsters but I use my khukri's and as long as they function fine, it's not really a big issue to me. I'm not interested in impressing any khukri snobs which might be out there on some other forum.

I'm interested in slaying multiflora rose, clearing brush, and hacking up zombies if such a situation ever occurred.

And for that, my H.I.'s do just fine even with the (IMO) unnecessary habaki bolster.

Advantage? It makes things easier for the sarki.

Disadvantage? Some think it's ugly. Some also think that Kawasaki KLR's are ugly, but that doesn't make them bad bikes and doesn't mean that I'll stop riding mine.

If you're ever planning on rehandling a khukuri, performing a "de-habaki" procedure on the bolster is a fairly easy thing to accomplish at the same time.

Easier for the sarki is just fine with me, but if it in any way compromises strength its better for me to pay a somewhat higher price for a khukuri without the "habaki". I also think the khukuri looks better not using the habaki, but thats secondary. The stronger alternative will always have my vote.

I dont have the knowledge to judge if the habaki is good or bad out of a strength perspective, but it seems that it was put there not really to increase the strenght of the khuk but to make construction/fit of the frog easier. I have a HI Kothimoda that fits perfectly into the frog, so it can be accomplished without the habaki. I really dont see the need for it out of any perspective.
