I'm not interested in wood that is super rare with insanely high prices. I'm looking for wood that will work well as handle scales for a reasonable price.

Do you have any kind to recommend?

I got some ipe (Brazilian walnut) flooring scraps at a building materials recycling place. It was just a couple of $$ for a couple of scraps that were 12-18" and thick enough to split on a band saw. Dense enough to sink in water, seems to polish up nicely. It is also commercially grown in some places.

I've also found some nice birdsyeye maple, oak, and walnut flooring.

If you just want a simple useable scale try hardwoods like maple or mahogany.
Look up a exotic hardwoods supplier in your area. I was able to get a really nice piece of cocobolo for like 16 bucks. Its enough to make 4-5 pairs of scales.

+1 on the exotic hardwoods suppliers. I found quite a bit of interesting stuff in the scrap bin at my local establishment (Colonial Hardwoods in Springfield VA). $2 for each piece and I walked away with four or five nice slabs of rosewood, redheart, and zircote.
