Reasoning behind Spyderco's packaging?

Sal/crew,
what was the reasoning behind the packaging and wrapping that you've used over the past X years, specifically for the knives?

I've seen black boxes, red boxes, and now the (impressive) white boxes with the logo, etc...

I still get red, black and white boxes when I buy Spydies from Ramrod. Are the red- and black-boxed models some of the old(er) stock?

Some knives come out of the boxes wrapped in plastic, some have a "cigarette foil" wrap and some are not wrapped at all... I am especially curious about the "cigarette foil" wrapping that you've used in the past.

Was all this a natural evolution progression, or was it inspired by some unknown (to us forumites) reasoning?...

It might have something to do with having a lot of old boxes in stock, and not wanting to waste them?

I like the white boxes, because they stack neatly on my shelf and have the name of the knife on the end, so I can quickly see what's there.

The older smaller boxes show signs of handling very quickly, so the knife may be still virgin, but the buyer will know it's been fondled by strangers.

I don't like the few bubble back Spyderco packages I've met in odd places like the last gun show I was at. I can't conveniently take the knife out, examine it, and put it back neatly, and bubble pack gives me a case of "Mammoth Mart" paranoia.

I've just realized that the small green Spyderco catalog can not be fitted inside the older boxes. I guess that rules out the "older type boxes available" theory, James? I guess that the stock has just been sitting on the shelves for a VERY long time...

When (roughly) were the switches between the various packaging schemes effected, Sal/Danelle?

Heyns - I'll try to make this make sense.

We mave different makers in Seki. All of them good and all of them competitive. One of the ways that they distinguish themselves from each other is with the color of the boxes they use.

The foil wrap vs the plastic wrap is something that we've been testing for a long time. Mostly has to do with avoiding corrosion, but we are also learning that different handle materials respond differently to the different wrappings.

The new slider boxes (white box, blue lettering, gold bug) are needed to hold the PDR catalog that is included in the box. The "Standard" models have been moved into the slider boxes. For a variety of reasons, we have not yet moved all of the models into the slider boxes. Eventually all of the knives will come in the slider boxes.

Hope that helps.
