I’ve been window-shopping Reate flippers. Their Hills model has a CPM-S35VN blade and a Ti handle. It appears to my untrained eye/mind to be somewhat like the ZT 0450 (??). The Hills sells for ~$180, which is $20 more than the 0450 but still half or less the price of everything else Reate sells.

Is this a “lower cost/quality” Reate similar to the Spyderco Byrds or is this a “real” Reate that just happens to have a really great price? I know I’ll get what I pay for, etc..... but I just don’t understand one single half-price model in an extensive line of costly knives. I can understand the entire Byrd line, but I just don’t get one single out-of-character model in an extensive line of reasonably high quality/cost knives.

I think its just their entry level knife. There’s nothing wrong with the quality of it.
If you like the the way the knife looks I say go for it.

ZT0450 substantially lighter, especially in CF version and smaller than the hills. Can’t comment on Hills quality but would imagine it is in line with their other products.

The Hills is a great knife and a solid bargain at the price. It’s one of the earliest Reate knives; I think after the Horizon A/B and first gen District 9. It’s not a late model, budget offering rather an early model as Reate was developing as a manufacturer.

I’m not entirely sure they’re currently producing the Hills or just selling off stock from the last run. Either way, it’s a full fledged Reate, just a little less “fancy” than some of their recent designs.

I love mine and plan to someday grind the hump off the blade and make more of a spear point.

Also, it’s a very different knife than the ZT0450.

Hackenslash summed it up. The Hills has the quality found in other Reate models, but without the extensive machining. The blade size and profile are more similar to the 0562 than the 0450.
