I'm meticulously searching for my next purchase, which will hopefully be my last for a while.

Came across the Torrent the other day and I keep coming back to it. Love the aesthetics and by most if not all accounts great F&F, good ergos, rock solid and a pretty decent value for the level of detail.

I've considered and am still considering a 247, Slysz Bowie, Tolk, VECP, Shiffer Recon, maybe a Master Blaster if I can find one I like, and even a Curtiss F3 although its likely more than I want to spend.

I'm not hung up on any specific knife feature. Looking for something sturdy, aesthetically pleasing, deployment method can be anything although I prefer to have thumbstuds/hole on a flipper(not a necessity), 3.25-3.75" length, preferably all Ti.

The only thing I ask is for those who have not handled a Reate please do not bash the brand/product for the sole fact that it is not produced in the USA.

I have owned 6 Reates and all have had flawless fit and finish, awesome actions, and rock solid lock ups. I'm also a huge fan of the Slysz Bowie. It's one of my favorite Spydercos that I have owned and I have owned about 50+ different Spydercos. From my experience, both the Torrent and Slysz Bowie are excellent choices.

I have feedback on the Reate Torrent after carrying and using it for a while. I bought it new from a dealer. I've also owned an Curtiss F3, Olamic 247, Southard Tolk, Les George VECP, and a FFKW Masterblaster. I only keep knives that I truly love, because I carry and use my knives as they were intended as tools. I'm not a collector. Nothing wrong with that, by any means, though.

All of that said on all of those, I still have the VECP, Masterblaster, and....the Torrent :)

My thoughts on it? It's a tad heavier at 6 oz, but it's easily pocketable for EDC. It was my first Reate, and the F&F is impeccable on it. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another of the brand. Although it's categorized as a high-end production, I feel it's comparable with the other mid techs in your list. The detent on mine is damn near perfect. Not too strong, not too weak. It's dialed in so well that it can be opened via flipper or the thumb studs. The ergos are fantastic, no hots spots for my medium hands, and the clip w/ ceramic ball (from Begg) functions flawlessly as well.

If you can't tell yet, I really, really like mine. It's found a home in my permanent rotation. Good luck in your choice!

I have a few Reates. The Torrent was my first one. I am in love with that knife. It is similar to my ZT 0392, but better, in my opinion. It's not a light knife, but not clunky either. The fit and finish are superb, and I love the back spacer on it. Super smooth action on that knife too. Great attention to deal on this piece. It's not cheap, but you won't find a better knife on the market at that price point. I would say that Reate Knives has truly changed my opinion on the phrase, "made in China".

If you're interested in taking it up a notch, the Reate Future is incredible, and I would venture to say, the finest production knife ever made.

That Future looks awesome just wish it was a 3.25" to 3.5" blade and I would order one right now!!

If you're looking for a knife in that size range, the Rike 1508s is great. It's an integral too. I bought one and modded it with wave opener.

So for the owners of the Torrent, would you hesitate to use this knife for tough, yet reasonable tasks? I work in the field on constructions sites a few times a week and it won't be a safe queen for long.

Also, can the knife be deployed slowly with the thumb studs or is it always going to fly out? Not a deal breaker, just curious.

Yes, I have no doubts it would hold up. Although, the heaviest use I've put mine through is breaking down cardboard, so I'd wait to see how others chime in re: this.

Once the detent is overcome, when using the thumb studs to open, the blade flies out until it locks up. So, a slow, controlled opening via that method is extremely difficult to impossible.

Own 2 Reate knives - the Horizon D Ti, and Epoch. I would not hesitate to use these knives for any reasonable task that any other knife could reasonably be expected to perform. I have brought the Horizon camping on numerous occasions and used it to trim branches, shave tinder, etc, and it's been great. The M390 steel on some of their knives is just awesome. Flipping action is some of the best I have experienced. My Epoch flies out and falls shut. No preloading/button pushing or wrist action needed to extend the blade on these.

Thumb stud opening on the Torrent is pretty much impossible.

On yours maybe. I can with mine and I've read and watched where numerous other owners can with theirs as well.

Place your thumb at 6 o'clock and flick upwards towards 12 o'clock. Much like the ZT 0550 had to be flicked open, easy peasy :)

I have a shelf queen Torrent. It's a beautiful well crafted knife. Love the blade shape and the ergonomics. Flip is like butter. I can confirm, there's no using the thumbstud. The only negatives I have is I have a tiny snail trail on the blade. I have tried to buff it out. Anyone know what causes that? Also, the ball at the end of the pocket clip is black. Would have made more design sense for that to be the matching aqua color IMHO. Also, I have #64 or #94. I'm pretty sure that is the number stamped on the inside of the scale. These are no longer in production, I think.

I'm looking to sell mine. Nails1908 - shoot me an email if you are interested. I am reactivating my gold membership today...

I don't carry anything but Doc Shiffer folder's these days so my vote is go Recon, you can find them very affordable on 2nd hand market. I've seen several good deals on IG and some FB pages
