Rebuilding an axe: ya'lls opinions

ive done some mods like this before...if the rest of the head is pot...you might want to consider just using the factory edge. if its really a junk axe, its probably not worth the time it will take to cut, reheat and retemper the edge to make it useful. using the factory edge doesnt add too much weight. but if you like a challenge...then i say go for it! i always love seeing people do what theyve got their hearts set on...but please put up some pix, so we can get motivated on our projects! :D

well im definitely cutting down the height, its way to tall and heavy for the camp axe i want, but ill try it with the factory edge, lots of nicks to file out of the bugger, but hey it like you said a project

thanks for the encouraging post, and yes i will be sure to add more vids and pics, hopefully some chopping as well

I can't resist posting my version of an old saying :D

This is the ax my grandfather made,
My father replaced the handle,
And I replaced the blade.

Sounds good as new.

Some people keep the blade cool as the cut them down. and I guess they don't have to re-temper them.

Didn't you say something about using a cutting torch? I don't think it would be possible to keep the bit cool enough while using a cutting torch.

Edit to add: By "cool enough" I mean cool enough to preserve the temper.

i might have by accident but what i had in mind was a cut-off wheel, specifically the 4 1/2in kind for hand grinders

Well It's only taken two years to continue this project but now that I have a shop at my disposal this has jumped ahead on the the ever growing project list.

Here is the axe head, I was able to get it taken through an EDM and have the majority of it cut, though no one put a new program in so the variance in steel thickness and cheeks caused some problems. Had to chop the rest of the way down with a hacks saw and file them perpendicular to the sides. I was hoping to keep some of the cheek when thinking out the design but I guess I got carried away with the haft and ended up cutting the height of the eye too low.

Here is the haft I plan on using, and I know the shoulder is on the wrong side but it's kind of grown on me. If it breaks it's no worries and I can replace it as need be but I wanted to keep the old haft that was original to the axe.

Any questions, comments or critique are more than welcome and thanks for having a look,
