Hi, curious as to which one of these folks prefer the most and why? I'm looking for another fixed blade, something a bit smaller than my BK2 and really want to try a Buck. Don't expect to do any dressing but looking more as an all-around fixed. Also, different subject, but any nighthawk owners care to chime in on how they like it? How durable have you found it to be (ie batoning)? Thanks and looking forward to your replies!

I think the Vanguard will be the stand out knife among those you listed. Its a great design for a fixed blade knife. You can't really go wrong with any of those listed, but the Vanguard is just a little better ;)
I have a nighthawk, I have used it a ton, but sorry I usually just cut with my knives. Its a thick blade and very durable, but I usually use a hatchet when needed.

No problem. Heres some nighthawk pics I posted in a different thread yesterday. The nighthawk has a very comfortable handle, but I did notice that briar patches and thorns do take little chunks out of the rubbery OD coating on the handle. I like the nylon sheath also, but it is for vertical carry only. Coating on the blade wears great, my knife is about 5 years old, and it gets used. Good luck with your choices!

The Vanguard is one of my favorite Buck fixed blades. It is available in several handle/steel combos, depending on your needs and budget. I also like the mini Alpha, but it isn't my first choice for a general purpose knife.

I like the Vanguard mainly as a hunting knife, but I sold a rubber handle model to a co-worker a couple years ago and he uses it mostly as a camp knife. He's been very satisfied with it, except for the fact that everyone wants to borrow it all the time. ;)

In this forum there is another thread 'Giving a Buck for a birthday' by, Paul Rev Ear . In this he stated he battoned his Night Hawk and broke the blade . DM
