Hey guys,

I've been lurking around these forums for awhile now and decided to finally post. I am looking for a new knife in the $80 or less price range.

I have it narrowed down to either the Benchmade Mini-Griptillian or the Kershaw Leek. I am looking for a smaller folder, I don't want anything much larger than either of these knives. I was just wondering what you think about these two knives or if you guys have any other recommendations in that price range.

Thanks,
Dave

You should be able to get a Leek for under $40.

For that price, the sky's the limit. Benchmade. Check out Boker's CLB line of folders for around $30.

Last time I checked,
www.eknifeworks.com
has the Leek for $35.99 with free shipping. They are great knives, but a little fragile if you use your knife pretty hard. I like the Grips a little better, but to each his own.

Thanks for all the advice. I love spyderoco's, but I have too many and I was looking for something a little different. My Caly 3 has been my EDC for over a year now and I thought it was time for a little change. I like knives that can stand up to some heavy use. I think it's time for me to get my first Benchmade, and I'll probably be buying a Mini-Grip later today.

There are literally hundreds of great knives that fall into that price range. You need to visit either a show or a big dealer and try the ones you like in your hand and pocket then pick what works best for you.

Personally I like Spydercos, Al Mars, and some of the offerings from AG Russell in production knives in that price range.

imo- If you go for the Leek stay away from the 40$ ones - It uses 440A (blah)
I prefer the S30V, although that model is not 40$ - more like closer to 80$

$80 will get you a Spyderco Lava. The Lava is amazing and much much more special than a Leek or Mini-Grip.

Leek's haven't been made in 440A since June 2007. Since July 2007 they've been 13C26.

If the limit is $80, the 1660CB composite blade (as mentioned by Antihero) or 1660DAM Damascus Leek's are very nice. Perfect "gentleman's knife."

I got a Mini Grip a couple of months ago, was a bit indifferent to it at first but now it's become a MAJOR USER. Why? It's extremely well-made,opens and closes so well, not too bulky or heavy and cuts excellently. I use it a lot outdoors in the garden and it's become a workhorse. It tucks away well in the pocket and I prefer it over my Spydercos, it's not the best looking knife on earth by a long way, but it is very satisfying to use.I got mine in yellow in case of dropping it in foliage and you can see it a long way off!

Kershaw 1993-2?

At $80, you have a lot of choices.
Of the two you listed, I would choose the mini-Griptilian. Better lock, significantly better edge retention. I bought a mini-Grip for $56.25 plus shipping from New Graham.

After all your recommendations I was very indecisive about what to get. But I ended up ordering the Composite Leek and I got a Spyderco Sharpmaker just for the hell of it too haha. I should be receiving them in a few days from Newgraham and ill tell you how I like the knife then :D.
