Looking for a good yet cheap compass, let's say around $10. Just for general usage, not going to go hiking with it or anything.

The brunton classic can be had for very cheap and seeing as you aren't relying on it for hiking and such, it'll do just fine.

I've had several of the Silva/Brunton watchband compasses over the years. 7 or 8 bux. Be prepared to replace it every year or two as they tend to develop fatal bubbles or sticky pivots. I finally sprang for a Marathon 'dry' wrist compass (35 bux) a coupla years ago and it's still working.

If you have a smartphone, you can download a compass app. Of course, your smartphone will have GPS too, but they also have built-in magnetometers, for use as a true compass.

Obviously not intended for extended use or survival. But it works, and if you already have the smartphone, you don't have to carry another gadget.
