Hey Jeff....What do you use in the Jungle/ nav classes as far as compass and GPS?

I have a Cammenga, but Id like to get me a new baseplate/sighting compass and a GPS, and would like some reccomendations from the dudes who have dirt time with some....

I have, like you, used Lensatics for over 20 years now. Well, I don't know how long you have been using them!

If you want something that is rather cool that I have also used for the same amount of time, try a Recta DP Matchbox. I don't even know if you can get Recta any longer but Suunto makes their version as well.

It is a rock solid piece of gear. I took a spill down the side of a rather steep mountainside in the Shenandoah National Park back around 1986 and it survived that!

Yeah, not quite 20 years, but a decade at least!!! :o

Theres alot to be said for a baseplate style compass, and Id like to switch things up.......:)

Im gonna look into the Recta style compass though....Don youve never steered me wrong!!

Ranger or Suunto MC2. I'm trying the MC2 in the jungle on this trip since it has a global needle.

GPS: Garmin Venture HXC (I think that's the name). Absolutely the best GPS I have used to date. Picks up excellent. Locks on quick. Very user friendly. Very compact.

Thanks Jeff.

Especially on the GPS. Ive never owned one before, and wanted a good one.

Keep us posted on the MC2. Thats an interesting feature.

You'll give about a buck 80 for the Garmin but it is well worth it. I've had probably 10 different GPS units and this is the best I have found so far.

mine is the HC. Don't know why I put HXC because that's the model that costs about 50 bucks more

The HCX model has upgraded internals for more accurate locations and better tracking and sattelite reception if I remember correctly. So I think that they are worth the extra money to get a better unit but that is me. I sold the HCX units at a store I worked at and they sold and worked very well.

My old Magellan GPS takes FOREVER to start tracking. It works well but maybe it is time for an upgrade.

Jeff, which Silva Ranger compass do you recommend? There is quite a price range on the Rangers, from around $20 - $65 depending on the model. I just picked up another lensatic GI compass but I would like something with civi scales on it.

I didn't know that you could buy a Ranger for 20 bucks. Where?
