I need a recommendation for some water proof hiking boots that will be used in Yosemite National Park and probably for other places too. What would you recommend that won't break the bank?

Cabelas Meindls in hiking or hunting configurations. Great leather boots, cork footbeds, goretex, plenty of width options. Most comfortable I've owned.

I also like the Asolos a lot. FSN 95 or if you want heavier, Sasslong model. www.sierratradingpost.com if you know your size in Asolos. [I like the Meindls but they are a fair amount more money.]

I have a pair of Vasque Sundowners that I really like. I've had them 5 years, & they're still going strong.

merril moabs. water proof model around 100 bucks and theyre very flexible and lite.i hiked to half dome in them and cant say enough good about them.

Montrail Torre GTX!!!!!!! I've been running mine hard for 5 years, in rough Big Island lava and muddy river valleys with no problems. GREAT BOOOOOTS!

I wear boots 5+ days a week, and have climbed or walked most of the major (and many minor) trails in CA, the Western States, and various foreign countries. Here's my $0.02. Sorels are too warm for Yosemite, even if you were spending the winter in the back country, and they'll get torn up by the rocks. Merrills are too flexible, you need a fairly stiff sole for anything off the tourist paths. Try Asolo, Vasque, or Danner. Get them at least ankle high. Leather, gore-tex is good. Depending on the model Rocky or Timberland may be a good choice.

Spend the money on good boots! Your feet and back will last a lot longer.

Danner. My last pair lasted me over 20 years of hard use in the Florida Everglades and then 5 years use in California, before giving up the ghost. I just wore my current pair to Yosemite, and I expect them to last me the rest of my life.

I second eisman, I had a really nice pair of Asolo's all leather and they shrunk after being wet and dried in the sun. Danner are really tough and more military-ish, My choice is Vasque!

I'm more than happy with my Merrells I've had for over two years. If these bite the dust, I'll likely go for another pair of Merrells.

I LOVE my montrail torre's but if I had the cash I'd most definitely invest in a pair of danners.

I think over the years I've owned them all.
I have a pair of Danner Pursuit, a pair of their rainforest and a couple of pair of Haix.
The Haix is a more refined boot and lighter. I wear them most of the time.
I wear the Danner rainforest for higher elevation and rocky areas.Stiff, tough and all leather.

The Pursuit is my...ummmm dress shoe.. LOL
Not that it isn't a worthy performer. It's a great boot. It's just the only footware I happen to have that looks half way respectable to go out to eat in:rolleyes: I bought those since they are police issue here.
