reccomendation inexpensive survival knife

Where do you plan to "survive" in? Woods, scrubs, jungle, marsh, desert, ocean? Did'ja think that through?

My cheap outdoors knife is always for everyone to first get a Mora to learn the ropes with. Second choice would be Condor brand of outdoors knives.

A Condor Rodan maybe ? It realy depends on your definition of a "survival knife" but IMO for a general use outdoors knife in the sub 50$ range the Rodan is hard to beat.

When you are talking about "survival"...you are talking about surviving, right? Saving yourself from death? Worst case scenario kinda thing....with only your trusty survival knife on you to get you back alive?

And the most you want to spend on it is 50 bucks?

"I want to survive....but not if it's gonna cost me more than a Grant."

"Survival" depends on what the situation is, woods, urban, out at sea, mountain climbing, etc..

Generally it's refering to the woods, I guess for me it would be. Anyway, get a BK-2 if you need a prybar, chopper, batoning machine. If you are not so hard on your knives, then a Mora makes a much better slicer, great for bushcraft, cleaning fish, and general camp chores.

I have the Condor 4" bushcraft, it's okay, not the sharpest, I can't seem to make it much sharper either. I have a machete from Condor, and it's sharp, and I can get it sharp, so go figure.

Another big knife, is the Schrade Extreme Survival, it's 1/4" thick and tough for only $35. Ontario machete's are a great bargin as well, the 12" Cutlass is a great chopper. For around $50, it's worth looking at the Ka-Bar Cutlass machete, warthog, and their other Taiwan made blades.

If and when the zombies finally come to town, i will be taking my Busse SCABS and the BJCG with me. Can't go wrong with a Mora though, for more toughness a BK2. Both make some awesome knives.

I would go for a budget Nessmuk trio:

Mora knife, Fiskars hatchet, Coghlans sierra saw.

winchester bowie knife is like 20 bucks from walmart...

you might be able to find a full sized kabar for about 50 bucks. (( not a paid BF dealer ))

you can look online for it and I'm sure other places will have it for less then 50 bucks but shipping is a bitch!

Mora is a solid choice....The CS Bushman as well. VERY different sizes, so budget shop and have both!

condor for the bigger choppers types
mora for the smaller finer work stuff

+1.

I can also recommend a budget heart surgeon to deal with that heart attack... :)

Joking aside, if this knife you want to buy is genuinely being considered for survival and you plan to use it to keep yourself alive in the bush, please don't cheap out, regardless of your financial situation. Save the money for a while and get something like a Fallkniven F1 or a Cold Steel SRK. Those are knives that have been proven to save lives in survival situations. They aren't super expensive, but they're not cheap either. Either one will definitely run you more than $50... probably closer to $150. But if it's your life we're talking about, isn't that worth it to you? My life is worth more than $150 to me...

P.S. - I wouldn't suggest a Ka-Bar because that's a fighting knife, and those fighting features may give you problems in a survival situation in the woods: weak tip, rat-tail tang, and back spine-side guard, for example.

I totally disagree with the notion that having an expensive knife will improve your odds of survival. There are plenty of sub $50 options that will serve you well. Knowledge and skill are much more important than how much you paid for a knife.

Mora
Cold Steel Bushman or G.I. Tanto
Condor Rodan, Kumunga, or Golok
Various KA-BARs, including the Becker BK11, BK14, and BK2

Of these, depending on your needs, the best performance/price are the Mora, the Bushman, and any of the Condors.

If I only had $50 to spend, I'd get a Mora and a Rodan or a Mora and a Golok.

This. All sound advice. My Rodan is my most-used woods knife and I have many pieces that cost at least 5 times as much.

For $50 you could get an Ontario machete and Large Buck Paclite. You could even wrap the Buck handle with paracord and tie a monkey fist on the end of the handle so you would always have your knife and some cord with you.

How much did your survival knife cost?

Is that really all your life is worth?
