I recently purchased a SOG Aegis AE04. I am not happy with the feel of it and am debating on getting the SOG Penatagon or perhaps a BM Barrage or similar. Any comments on the Pentagon's feel would be most appreciated/

I like the looks of the Pentagon. I have an older Gerber Applegate covert that feels great and started this whole search. I recently found out about the assisted models and have a new Gerber Applegate covert. Really like the assisted opening but the feel is not the same as my Made in the US older model.

Any suggestions for a strong assisted opening tactical would be appreciated. I do like the appearance of my original Gerber but would like a good quality assisted folder. Under 100.00 with selective shoping would be great.

Regards

SOG is not real popular around here and I think you might have just found out why. I think I would look at another company if you want a higher quality folder. There are some ZT knives that are large and assisted but the price is above your limit except maybe the 0350 if you shop around but it also one of the smaller models. I would go with the Benchmade of the two that you are looking at. I'm not a big assisted opening guy so I'm sure you will get more options from others.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the Benchmade axis lock folders. I used to look for assisted folders only but after getting a mini-ritter griptillian, I don't think the assisted action is needed. The blade flies open with minimal effort. I have more of a problem opening my nitrous assisted mini-stryker.

I would suggest handling some axis locks at a local store if you have one. Might open up the market for you.

How about the SOG Trident? It is assisted opening, only 3.6 ounces and 3.75" blade. I have one and it is great.

I have a BM Barrage and like it quite a bit. The handle is however my primary hang up. It is a little thick, slick and is zytel. It seems to be pretty sturdy, but not in a league as my ZT 0350. But the action of the BM Auto Axis is the best assisted opener I have used. I do like my ZT 0350 but not the blade style for EDC. The flipper design on the ZT is also one of my favorites but it is a liner lock and nowhere near the axis lock. As I already said, My 0350 is great fo SD but not as nice for EDC. The recurve makes it less desirable as well. I wish they did a drop point or a clip point. The BM 580 barrage is still big and thick but it seems to carries decent. The BM 585 mini-barrage is a smaller version of the 580 barrage and carries better. The Axis Lock is really a top notch. I also looked as well as handled some sog and was turned off by them, the quality just wasnt as good as the BM I was looking at. And the price was not significant enough to make me move. The BM 580 is really a great blade.

I assume you're talking about the folding Pentagon. [I have the fixed blade 5" Pentagon and the 3.5' mini- Pentagon which are both good looking affordable daggers] I also have both the 4" pentagon- elite folder and the 5" pentagon- elite II folder. I find the 4" model to be a little flimsy with a less than rock solid lock-up.[ my model however is quite old and the new ones might be fine] In any case I think the 5" folder is a great knife and a comparative rarity in a vast sea of 4" [or less] folders. In fact the Pentagon-elite II and it's cousin, the 5" Spec-elite II ,are both among my favourite folders, which I don't think I'll ever sell, because their size alone makes them fairly unique. The only other company that makes affordable folders that size ,or even larger, is Cold Steel.

Despite the unpopularity of SOG, I have several. I have been carrying the pentagon elite for years and its always done what I wanted. Its quick too. I have never had any real complaints except maybe some issues keeping the blade as sharp as I like. It's a nice long knife too. That being said I just ordered a spyderco endura 4 wave and a CS ak-47 because I was getting a little bored with my SOG.

The Elite actually has an interesting Arc-lock. Looks like an axis lock...it might just be licensed to Sog from BM. The elite doesnt look all that bad. But I am not a dagger style blade fan.

If you dont like the dagger style they also make one called the spec-elite I or II, I don't remember. I also have that one. Its as nice as the PE, If not a little nicer.

I would go with the Barrage myself if I had to pick from those two only. The Spec Elite/Pentagon is a pretty good knife, but I prefer the comfort and feel of the Barrage better myself, the SOG feels a little "cold" to me.
