I want a single blade slip joint knife that has a blade of atleast four inches and a handle thats atleast 4.5 to 5 inches long. I want it to be a in a higher carbon steel such as D2 and nothing less than 1095. I'm not a fan of GEC...they're just not my cup of tea. What would you guys suggest? and what is your take on Queen Cutlery?

Too bad you don't like GEC, cause the pioneer model would more or less match your requirements (a little smaller maybe ). What exactly is it that throws you off of GEC....? Coz imo they're one of the top slipjoint makers today!

Check out Queen's Dan Burke Grandaddy Barlow. It is a large single blade in D2. It is 4 7/8" closed, so the blade must be close to what you are looking for.

I have the smaller Barlow beside it (in the link). The F&F is great IMO. It has a very solid feel. Just be prepared to resharpen the D2 blade when you get it. It doesn't come too sharp.

That's an excellent recommendation "The Government". I think that falls nicely into the OPs requirements. I'd say that Barlow along with it's smaller brother next to it would be top notch companions for heavy duty daily chores. Maybe give the big barlow a break on Sunday and carry the little one.

Its a personal preference.I like and own thier scout model but I'm just not that big on blades that have etched logos on them. I guess I'm weird, but in a world which is so diverse, who isn't?

You don't like them you don't like them. You certianly don't have to defend your opinion!

A nice large Case Toothpick. It may not com in CV though if it doesn't, forget it.

Funny you should say that, as it is just about my only gripe with GEC aswell.

Here is a nice Boker Hunter:

So if I were to get that barlow...would DMT diamond stones do a good job on the edge and would the DMT Aligner be a good tool to use on this knife?

Yea, that would work good on D2. It will take awhile to reprofile the edge. Once it's done though it will be quick to touch up every now and then.

the barlow is in d2-- definitely need diamonds i believe they are sent out at 61 r.r.. i've sharpened 3 of them since nov. i'm glad i had power equipment to do initial bevels.once you get a somewhat decent edge it lasts a long time.

Yes, diamond is just the thing for D2. Queen also makes a 5" closed toothpick in D2, a little slimmer than the big barlow.

^DMT stones are what I used. I started with X-course and moved up to X-fine. I wouldn't want to start with anything less than "course" since the factory grind is a little obtuse. If you have an X-course you'll be in great shape. After sharpening/ profiling, the knife will be ready to impress.:D:thumbup:

EDIT: Wow three answers already!

I feel the same way about blade logos - I don't like 'em. I've used Flitz on my GEC's to remove the logos. Works pretty darn good. There is still a "shadow logo" that remains, but you have to turn the blade just right to really notice it. It's certainly not so "in your face" as it is from the factory.

Queen also makes a single blade folding hunter in that size range with D2.
