Hey guys,

One of my friends is looking for 7" fixed blade. His budget is up to $300.
Possible uses would be outdoors, skinning game, etc. Any reccomendations? I was
thinking maybe a Ranger RD7, Ontario RAT7 D2? Any others? Would appreciate it. Thanks!

The Busse ASH-1 is availible right now for a base price of 297, Blade is 6.5 inches. For what you mentioned though maybe take a look at some of bark rivers stuff.

Skinning with 7" blade length?

I advice you to focus mainly on the sheath (with this budget he can have a custom sheath made for specific knife) and the weight of the knife (avoid way too thick (=way too heavy) knives).

Ranger RD-7
Ontario RAT-7
Camillus - Becker Knife & tool - BK-7
Me personally, I wouldn't want to do any skinning w/ 7"blade unless it's all I have.

Get a Fallkniven A1 (6.3) for the outdoor chopping things and at the same time get a Fallkniven WM1/3G for the skinning and animal disassembly jobs.
Now you get money left to buy a bunch of swedish firesteels.
Neither of the knives mentioned are bad choices. It is more of taste and design features.
The Fallkniven are stainless VG10 steel core with 420J2 laminate.
If you are using a firesteel the Fallknivens are great for that too.

Since I don't have a large "chopper", I kindly like the RD7 and Scrapyard's Yard Dog. The Falknivven A1 is another one I like. As others have said, 7" is almost doubly long for skinning anything other than whales....and even then......

Thombrogan, skinning a whale is a very different story than a deer !! A whale 'skinner' has a long handle and very large blade .Go to a whaling museum and see. You might do ok skinning a small beluga with a Fallkniven A-1 .BTW beluga blubber is like rubber ,you can chew it forever ! Deer don't need a skinning knife as mostly it can be pulled off with cutting of only a bit of membrane.

Might have to check out a whaling museum. Pretty sure it's legal to catch minke whales off the coast of Japan (maybe only for Japanese, though) and they're barely larger than porpoise.

For the money you are going to spend ($300) I would get a Ranger RD-9 for my heavy duty chores & a Ontario RAT-3 or Rat Cutlery RC-3 for my light duty jobs & a victorinox SAK w/ alox handles for everything else ;) & still might have some $$$ left in your pocket !

I'd also recommend 2 separate knives.

A Fallkniven A1, Ranger RD7, or Ranger RD9; and a Bark River skinner.
Dozier skinner is also obviously a great choice but might kick you up over 3 bills for the two knives.

Ranger RD9 tough jobs, Rat Cutlery RC-3 for skinning and light jobs and prob a SAK for other stuff. That is my current woodland adventure setup.

Thanks guys for your input. I do understand that a 7" fixed blade is a little too big for skinning. Again, this would be for multi-purpose outdoors work and it's for a friend. He is just looking for one knife to carry while outdoors. Guess he's a one knife kinda guy, not like us knife sluts. I'll see if i can get him to get 2 knives.

Some very good suggestions here. Don't forget Swamp Rat knives - Ratweilers or Camp Tramps. I like 52100 for outdoors tasks!
