Received 802ss. Disappointed in Sheath

Not sure if anyone else out there has the 802ss.
I got re-acquainted with my brothers 102 while skinning out and processing his doe. I decided to pick up the 802ss, I live the S30V and Full Tang.

The knife itself is beautiful.
The sheath though does not fit the knife.
The handle is too wide and pushes the blade against the outside.
There is a lip as well that is already not looking that good.

I really like the Concealex that I got for my BM210.
I was on the fence about getting it for the 802ss but now leaning that way.

Always looking for an opinion.
The 'Signature' scored the spine.
Is that a returnable offense?
See the pictures.

Wierd about the sheath.
That sig busting the plane of the spine would bug the sheet outta me.
I'd contact Joe Houser (Buck Employee of Every Month).

I used the board to e-mail Joe Houser last Friday and no response yet.

I hate using forums to air... but little one is sick today, wife is at work and I need to get it out.

I called Buck and their service rep started off less than helpful.
She started off interrupting me and trying to send me to sales.
Then she paused and invited me back into the conversation.

After some discussion she said they could buff out the blade and have Chuck resign it when he comes back.
I don't want or need to indispose Mr. Buck to resign a knife he did already and I am sure someone else would not mind the marking at all.
I just have a bit of OCD and that is my burden I know but....
I just wanted an exchange for another without the blemish.
She could not understand what I was asking or I was not asking for what I needed very well.

To be honest I felt I was pretty clear:
"The series was produced in 2005. You still sell them on your website. I do not think they sign the knives on each order, I bet you have some signed in stock. Can I exchange for #218 for any other number in the series that does not have the signature running up into the spine/backbone?"

Her response, "We are not told how he signs them, all I can tell you is my manager said (she did pause to ask someone) we can buff it out and he can resign."

I don't think I can send my knife back to get rebuffed and have a 70 year old resign a blade that is going to see use. She made no effort to really listen to what I was saying. She just kept repeating that it adds 'character' (my words from friday being used against me.. I knew that is what would probably be said) and makes it 'unique'. In the end they said to send a detailed letter and they would see what they can do.

Now I just see Chuck Buck sitting down to sign a knife he has seen before and thinking to himself about some dillweed that forced him to sign again to keep up their good service record. haha (funny, not funny)

I'll try e-mailing Joe H again.

I don't think Chuck would mung resigning it. It isnt that big of a deal.
If you dont want it signed, I am sure they won't sign it ;)

Good luck, I hope it all works out for ya! Me personally, if it were a user, I would've used it as is, but that's me. My users look used ;)

Shaman -

These knives are call the "Signature Series" They are a limited edition run that were all signed by Chuck Buck. He signs them using a small rotary tool that runs off a tank of compressed air.

Chuck and CJ sign knives regularly for customers and friends. If the knife needs to be fixed, it would not be a problem to get it re-signed. These are, after all called the "Signature Series". :)

Having looked at your pictures, I might recommend somethinga little less drastic than sanding off the signature. The imperfection looks like it is right at teh point where the blade flats and the spine meet. It looks like it might be possible to sand a few thousands of an inch off the flat spine of the knife and re-buff that area.

I recommend this because it may be difficult to re-buff the blade evenly -
S30V is notorious for getting cloudy when mirror polished. We don't do it often for this very reason. In any case, we would be happy to take care of the problem for you. As others have stated, Joe Houser (Buck's Director of Consumer Relations) is a moderator on thsi forum. You can contact him or myself and we can make sure this gets taken care of.

Thanks - Jim

Shaman,,,,Let us know when you get around to using that 802 on a deer. I for one want to know how it does.

I actually carried an 805SS with me to the camp last year but just could not bring myself to use it. Maybe if it was already pre-disastered like yours, I would have:rolleyes:.

I too love that full tang and the 805 fits my hand fairly well. It could have been half an inch or so longer in the handle.

My sheaths fit like yours because of that handle. Makes me wonder if one of the kydex guys could come up with something for it.

We did a "wish list" thread here a year or so back and mine was a fixed blade in one of the premium steels (BG42) made along the lines of the 802/805/ but with a rubber non skid handle and a 5.5 inch blade length, like the model 121, for a little bit more length when peeling out a backstrap.

A simple user with that thinner blade in good steel.

Let us know if you get to use that 802

For Pack Rat,
I have smaller hands and the 4" blade is good for me and the handle is a nice fit.
I really like my BM210 but its blade style is not great for deer, I did use it on my doe. It works GREAT on turkeys, but deer... not so much.

I already took my deer by bow this year, but going to try for turkey with bow this weekend. They are not as routine as they have in the past so I am not getting good chances to ambush them. So we'll see.

For Jim,
I've e-mailed Joe twice through the board, just waiting for him to look through his mail. I am sure he gets a bunch.
I did not see an e-mail address on the Buck website and I did not see a Private Message option attached to users here.
Your e-mail option here is turned off.

A deer by bow is an accomplishment that I haven't even tried. Old arm joints don't like that much stress on them. Congrats....

I am betting that BM210 is a drop point?? I tried a dp year before last and didn't get along with it at all. I can see why skinners are clips.

Give a 5 or 5.5 inch blade a shot. You may like the extra length when reaching in to cut away a hindquarter or trimming out a backstrap.

maybe you can tell our gun season is near...lol... I think I have a fever...

Deer just take patience.
Fall Turkey, now there is another story.
You have to stalk or ambush an animal with super keen eyesight.
Not an easy task. ;)

Got multiple e-mails from Buck today (customer service from all directions :)) and am sending the blade back for reconditioning.
I'll take pictures of it when I get it back. I have no doubt it will be perfect.

Once I get it back, I'll be shipping it off for a Custom Kydex Sheath to replace the stock one.
I'll take pictures of that too as well. Probably be a couple months though due to turn around times on the repair and custom sheath work.

Shawn - sorry for the mistake with my account. I am now set up so I can receive e-mails. Glad to hear you got taken care of - Jim

No issues. Thanks for the pointer.
Kids have been sick for about a week and I think it made me a bit 'sensitive'.
When you get overloaded on the big things in life, sometimes it is the little things that push one's buttons.

Thanks to online Buck staff for the follow-up and putting my mind to rest about the ability to recondition it with the same level of quality and not create a burden on their system. And my appreciation to Blades Forum users for their honest opinions and their fair minded responses.

:)

I for one will be real interested in seeing a kydex for it. Might motivate me to send an 805ss off for one. I may make one a user yet...lol...

Buck will fix yors right up.... and I bet they have it back to you within a couple weeks or sooner.

UPDATE: Just received the 802SS back today.
Perfect condition.
And then this week it goes off to Brown Ind. for the Kydex Sheath.

Flawless repair.
It is extremely hard for me to take a good macro picture with such a shiny blade. :)
