This is my second actual flashlight, the first being an Arc AAA. I was hoping to find something that had a little better throw and nice enough spill to take care of the things the AAA was not designed for.
I love the little AAA when it comes to smaller tasks and in-close work or even walking around, but if I want some real light from a little package, I decided I'd try an L4. Definitely not a mistake!
I have to admit though, I was a little worried at first. People tend to say it's very bright...for its size.... That usually tells me to not expect very much, but to expect it to be kinda bright given that it's a supposedly small flashlight. So, I didn't really have the highest expectations of it. When the L4 came, I played around with the lights a little bit to compare, but while I knew the L4 was a good deal brighter than the AAA, it wasn't until I was outside in my backyard that I saw the real difference.
I started with the AAA which lights up some of the ground without any real problem, but then I whipped out the tiny L4 and just flooded our little yard with light. I illuminated the trees extremely well and the flood/hotspot combination are very nice for this kind of use! Granted, it won't have this extremely tight hotspot that will throw insanely far, but I was certainly impressed when I illuminated the wall of a building across a parking lot as easily as I illuminate the opposite living room wall with my little AAA!
Also testing the beams next to each other, I like how very very white my L4's beam is, even compared to my Arc which is fairly white too! The beam shape and concentration is wonderful too.
Physically, there is the expected color mismatch of some parts. However, the mismatching on mine is such that it looks quite stylish, and could be easily construed as intentional. It really is a nice compact light, more compact than I imagined, and great fit/finish. Clips nicely to my pocket too!
I have to say that I was worried that spending a lot of money on a flashlight (when I could get a decent cheap one) would sour me on the quality and everything, but it hasn't! I like this thing a lot, and in the near future I may grab an E2e bezel and lamp to get some extra throw. However, I don't know how necessary that would be!
