Received GS! Thank you, Uncle!

Yesterday I received the Gelbu Special with black handle. A beautiful, nicely hollowed shiny, shiny mirror finished blade, black (wooden?) handle, flat buttcap are all very impressive.

Also it's light weight felt as a feather. Until I see the spine I thought it was very thin knife. Judging from the blade shape, it doesn't seem to be a very good chopper. But the sharp edge will well compensate for it. Anyways it's not fair to compare it to 20" AK, my first HI khukuri.

The edge was partially burred from the bottom to the "sweet spot". I tried a few swipes by chakma, didn't work effectively. Need some ceramic stick swipes and stroping that I'm going to do this weekend.

I forgot the perfect fit of khukuri to its scabbard. Smooth all the way, tightens in the very last inch. Carvings on the scabbard are also nice.
There's my pal who's another GS owner in Japan said he's also happy with his GS.

Thank you, Uncle!

Congratulations Satoshi san!!!
Another one through the formidable customs agents of your country!!!

The GS is one great khukuri and I believe that you will come to realize that the GS is also a very good chopper. It doesn't have the brute force the AK's have, but it is a formidable blade and a beautiful weapon! Enjoy.

I too own a GS but with the bone handle. This khukuri looks and feels like a good compromise of chopping and fighting characteristics, not biased towards one feature. I hope you love it as I do mine.

I was not avid fan of an individual kami until I found a trisul (trident) mark on the blade just now. Now I'm a Murali Dhar fan...

Digging HI forum log in search of him gave me happy hours to see he's changed from one of nameless three kamis to one of master kamis in Birgorkha! You GS fans made me drool over my keyboard for months since I ordered GS to Uncle Bill, now I feel rewarded for the time. Thanks for all your kind congrats!

Am I biased to say a GS is a must-have as stand alone, or an addition to any khukuri you own now! One downside, albeit its compactness it's a little too bulky in my pockets for daily carry.

omedetou!
good to hear that the evil customs agents didn't grab this one. (the only thing i have ever had confiscated at Narita was chocolate, and i am SURE they ate it!).
If you don't mind me asking, how was this shipped, and as what was it declared?
I am starting to get worried about having to carry my collection over there.
When I move to Sapporo next summer, I'll try to stop by in Tokyo (I have friends in Shinjuku and Shibuya). Maybe we can have the first ever "Zen Nippon Himareian Inpo-tsu Kukuri Kaigi" (^-^)/~

Uncle, I'd search for a 12 incher class in the near future. The long pocket idea is okay for the khukuri, but it just bulks up my pants to make it too attractive for beautiful part of humanity. Every time of trouble it seems the answer to buy another khukuri, a HIKV suffer's fate!

Tatsuo, I'm looking forward to seeing you at Tokyo. For Uncle Bill's and my experience for these one and half years, a 18" is okay, 20" is sometimes (mid August and Xmas season) okay. Two or more khukuris in a parcel lesser the chance. As far as I know there are five HI customers, including four pals of mine. Sapporo (Hokkaido) seems a little generous on large blades than Tokyo.
"Zen Nippon Himareian Inpo-tsu Kukuri Kaigi" is a great idea. I'm looking forward to seeing you next summer. BA is to visit Japan early next year, it might be the second Kaigi (convention).

You have a better chance at hand carrying your blades, but if confiscated at customs it is lost. A slow but surer way is to send it there, if you may fail it will be returned (by sea) so you can just try again.

I understand that Japan has much stricter laws on firearms, and (I think) will not allow the importation of non-"art swords", but why would a khukuri be a problem? It isn't trying to pass itself off as a Japanese "art sword" (neither is the HI katana - it's too distinctively different) so why the fuss? Is any justification ever given?

WrongFriend, nice to hear that you got your Gelbu Special! Finally! How big is you new toy? Very light blade , don't you think? Maybe some day you could send a picture of you holding your new khukuri. Take care! A good day indeed!

Wrong Friend:
Congratulations! I also have a Gelbu Special, and feel it is one of the best types.
It is wonderful to think that these knives are owned and treasured by people all over the world, from Europe, Asia, Pacifica and the Americas!
We are united in an important way by our shared enthusiasm and appreciation for the products of BirGhorkha...and the good offices of our friend Bill...long may he and the kamis, sarkis and helpers of Nepal prosper!

Mizutani San.

Congrat!
I love GS!
Gelbu Special has a barbarious look --- I guess the combination of thick spine, deep fullered blade and slightly bulging tip give the touch of terror in it!

WrongFriend, Congratulations on your Gelbu Special. I don't have one yet but it's the next one in line on my ever growing must have list.

Thanx for worm congratulations!

Snuffy, an art sword is defined not by its artistic look, but whether it is a genuine katana. Its maker, material, making process, shape, rig, all must be certified traditional and genuine.

Uncle, I've been too lazy to search for khukuri rum, I'd try to find and drink! One of my pals said he found, tasted one.

BA, I'm trying to take pics to send you. I with GS will be included. It's 18.5" OAL, 7/16 thickness in spine. Its weight I haven't measured, but must be as light as a feather.

gunhou, though I guesed, I just saw the reason why GS is loved by so many people. It will not decrease AK's beauty, though. Blessings on all khukuri concerns (means, everything under the sun).

mohd, is it barbarious? To me it looks ultimately sophisticated... but you may be right. I've already had wrong sense in knife measurement in size, and weight. I should doubt my sense of barbarousness!

Lamar, a really good knife gives fun to you even before you put your hand on it! Have fun with your GS-to-be!
