As someone else had said about this Bowie "now thats a knife!" Now that I've got it, I'm not sure what to do with it. I did a little chopping, my WWII works better. Don't get me wrong, I really like it and I'm addicted now to these HI knives. What does everyone use theirs for? The reason I"m really asking, the wife notices these really big shiny knives, whereas a little pocket knife or skinner can lay right on the table and she doesn't even notice them. ;) It looks like it would be great for butchering knife, but I don't do that.

Also, I tried to sharpen it up a little on my sharpmaker, not an easy task with a blade that big, and I only ended up dulling it. Any ideas why???

I'm toying with trying the convex edge thing, but don't want to mess it up.

The thing about these knives, they are beautiful, but for some reason I don't mind beating up on them. Some of my knives, even cheaper ones, I don't want to use but I have an overpowering urge to use these HI knives.

It's certainly not HI's best chopper but it's excellent for the job as far as bowies go. I think of mine as a hatchet in a smaller and lighter package that can also cut, poke and pry when necessary.

I had the same problem with mine -- took it to the Sharpmaker and it got duller if anything. There was very little bevel on mine. I used a file to grind a new one on and tried the Sharpmaker again. Much better results. The edge on mine is pretty hard. Expect to spend some time with the coarse stones to get everything right.

The thing with the sharpmaker is that it is set up to a specific angle. If the bevel on the knife that you're not sharpening is not the same angle then it can possibly make it duller or seem to do nothing at all.

Some folks have recommended using a marker to color the edge of the blade. The stone or device you're using should scrape off the marker on the contact areas. It might give you a clue as to what you're doing wrong.

Dunno... I can't sharpen very well but it might help.

I tried those sharpening doo dads a while ago and gave up. Probably because I'm weak and had difficulty holding the blade upright for long periods of time.

My AK bowie is a wicked chopper. For mine when I first got it the edge was too thick for it to be a good chopper. I used a belt sander and wet dry sandpaper on a strop and made the edge finer. After that it cut like mad.
