Hello,

Received my Benchmade Bali-Trainer today. An aquaintance at Benchmade decided to do me a favor (I need more friends like this).

First impressions are excellent. Fit and finish is first rate, especially for a designated trainer. Latch is just right; very tight lock up, yet it releases and swings free with a slight squeeze of the handles. Zero blade play when open and latched.

There is a little bump on the "edge' where the choil would be. I think this may be a blade stop when sparring with another training knife, I am sure Mr. Gollnick knows why it is there. If it is indeed there for that, then BRAVO(!!) to Benchmade for understanding this is a training tool for martial aspects of the Bali, not just a tool for practicing manipulation.

Thanks for reading,

GHEN

wow, you got it already?!
didn't think it would come out that soon...
or is it a prototype?

how does it flip? just like any other bali? the 'blade' seems a bit big, and perhaps a little heavy too...?

congrast anyway! :D

:D

Not a prototype, the blade is marked one one side (obverse) with the BM logo, and the other (reverse) with "Benchmade USA). There are no other markings.

It swings very nice thankyouverymuch! The blade LOOKS big (and therefore heavy) but as there is no grind at all it cannot escape looking so big. The lightening holes do a good job of bringing the weight down. I cannot tell much difference swing this or my model 42 with my eyes closed (yes...I actually tried it).

This is a very neat piece.

Well, ixpfah, you might just get lucky. Since he 40T has no edge, it could be considered a non-knife, and therefore exempted from the balisong restrictions. Check with your local authorities regarding this new developement. Good luck.

I don't know about Norway, but in most states in the US, an object that strongly resembles a weapon from more than a few feet away is restricted much like the weapon it resembles.

Some states are very precise in their laws defining what is a "knife", and the rules regarding their sale, regardless of what it resembles. And in the case of the 40T, we're gonna see some challenges to established rules since it does not match most definitions of a "knife". In the case of NYC you are right. My attorney feels the 40T would be classified as a "Martial Arts Weapon" like nunchucks and shurikens, and would be banned from being carried, but not from sale.

However, ixfpah's situation is specifically resticted to "balisong knives", and I'm giving him a chance to find out how restictive the laws in Norway are. Since the 40T isn't truly a "knife".

In my experience it is very rare in the U.S. for any item to be banned simply because of its appearance (the exception being the import restrictions on toy guns wthout the orange markings).

The problem arises in the manner in which a "look-a-like" device is used. Should you threaten someone with a trainer in order to steal from them...it is straight up Armed (Or Aggravated) Robbery. The fact that what you used to facilitate the crime was not ACTUALLY a weapon carries much less weight than the belief you tried to instill in others, and the reasonableness of their belief.

True, some local jurisdictions pass very restrictive laws. I am sure TonyCCW can tell you all about NYCs ban on replica firearms.

Having said all that, Mr. Gollnick is correct; in a way. If from a few feet away, someone believes the object in your hand is a knife...AND, you are being a jackass, you could be in trouble. Otherwise, I don't see much possibility of you being arrested, and much less possibility of being convicted of owning this trainer in a place you cannot own a bali.

If I were a betting man, I would say the Benchmade trainer WOULD be allowed in beautiful Norway.

ABOVE ALL, CHECK YOUR LAWS! and don't flip trainers in public, it makes you look like an idiot, you may get harrassed by (well meaning) police officers, and chicks don't think it's cool!

i went to my local police authority thingy, and he said i could order one! :D :D :D
so now i am. finally, my first bali 'alike', which i can own LEGALLY!

he was also going to invest the thing with the balisword, and he was pretty certain that there was no problem with that either. (but then again, he also didn't believe that balis were illegal, when i asked for that. ;))

didnt someone say dont ask police, beacuse it will differ, then he had a red light enallgy (sp?)

uuuuhhh... i beg your pardon? what did you mean by this? and what does sp mean?!

I think he meant analogy, not enallgy.
If somebody writes (sp?) then they are questioning whether they spelled it correctly or not.

Well being an ejurkated guy.., when I get analogies.., I know my nose has boogers in it..., and I snore!
