I received one of the new Spyderco Cat knives the other day. First impressions were fairly good out of the box. They would have been great had the knife come a little sharper. It would easily cut through paper and some light cardboard. However, it would not shave my arm and I must say it's the first Spyderco knife I have bought that could not right out of the box.

The knife does look great through. Opens easily in hand, although it did take me a few attempts to close it one handed as the liner lock is pretty stout on it. After playing with it for a bit closing it with one hand is no longer a problem. It does feel great in the hand. Although it would be even better with some jimping on the blade!!! :) The thumb just naturally rests right there where jimping would land.

Overall I am pleased with it. A knife that looks good. Appears to be of good quality manufacturing and does feel like a quality blade when you hold and play around with it. Should make for a good EDC blade. As far as the 440c blade I'll have to use it some more in order to form a better opinion on it.

I agree, but mine shaved hair. Maybe just a fluke? I also agree that, the liner lock is very stiff, and it needs to be "broken in".

I was sad to see they went away from carbon fiber. I thought it really classed the old models up. I still think it's a great model though.

Tex, do you have a Dfly 2? Im trying to figure out why one might like the other. They're similar in size, and price. But to me, Seki made with VG10 and jimping makes it a better knife. I like 440C and G10, but I like the weight of the Dfly, blade steel, and jimping better.

Depends upon how much knife your hand and pocket want to hold!

I have the the original and new Cat and the D'fly2 and several others. The Cat is one of my favorite pocket EDCs and I was glad to see Spydie release a replacement.

Cat2 is not quite as classy but every bit as useful as the original. (But please bring back jimping!)

Its size and wire clip make Cat perfect for pocket carry in an office work environment. The blade is large and thin enough for any slicing I might need to do. I'm not a hard user and I rarely have need of anything larger or stronger.

The D'fly2 is so thin and light, it's what I turn to when I want to carry something that's barely noticeable. And, as you note, it comes with jimping.

I've got 2 Spydies, a Delica and a Manix 2. neither came sharp enough to shave, actually they both had several dings in the edge.
I've got 4 Byrds too, only two of them came shaving sharp.
I've heard tales of spectacular OOTB sharpness, haven't seen it so far. *shrugs*

They caught my eye when they first came out. It's tempting to pick one up when the I get some fun money.

Does the Cat have a SS liner on the non lock side?
