... and one of the ceramic rods has a bump on one of the flat surfaces. I was sharpening a cheap knife for practice and felt it snag. Again a few times. I turned the knife to the other side just to see if it had a burr or something and felt the bump again. Ran my thumb down it and felt the bump. Crap. I was all excited about it, had watched the video, and now something slipped through whatever quality control mechanisms they have in place.

I have three pairs of rods and none of them were perfect. At first I just avoided the sides or edges that weren't nick free. Then later I started working out some of the rough spots by rubbing the rods together. This worked well as I recall.

If your stones are smooth on most sides and the bump is minor, then maybe they are par for the course. If they are badly disfigured you can send them back. Let's see what others say about this.

I thought about using the other rod to try and smooth the bump out but didn't know if that was the proper course of action.

Most of the fine stones that I own have some sort of imperfection; it seems to be common.

just how big is the bump?? If it's just a tiny little sharp particle sticking up off the stone it can be removed fairly easily just through sharpening or rubbing the other fine stone (maybe use the edge of one) against the sharp part. If it's a large bump then you can use a magic marker and avoid that particular flat, or call up spyderco and see about getting it replaced.

In the first generation sharpmaker manual it mentions imperfections in the
stones and it says to rub one rod against the other to smooth them out. Hope
this helps.

If it's just a small bump, try to rub it out with the other stone. No need to contact Spyderco unless you really can't fix it yourself.

Good luck.
