Received Partially Serrated by Mistake. Do I Keep It?

Fellas.. I ordered a Benchmade 484-1 Nakamura (straight), but just received their partially serrated instead. The blade is 3.08” (1.75” OG, 1” Serrated). I’ve always been kinda leery with the length (or lack there of) for that combo to be truly purposeful (on an EDC basis). The bummer part is that their return policy does not allow test driving (duh, i guess), and I have never used a partially serrated blade. If this was a a hundred dollar knife, no worries; I’d keep it. But this is a pretty expensive flipper (for me). I’m somewhat intrigued (since I do not own one already), but I don’t wanna be disappointed, either. My current edc is a Benchmade 4300 CLA auto (3.4”), which I absolutely love. Really wish I could try it lightly before deciding. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, guys.

I love and use half serrated blades for decades.
But you ?
No idea - just try :^D

I'd totally return it. I dislike serrations except for very specific tasks. Same thing happened to me once. I ordered a mini griptilian for my brother for Christmas and they sent me the partially serrated model. In that case I gave it to him anyway and told him what happened. He said it didnt bother him at all and hes been using and carrying it ever since. If it was MY blade though I'd have returned it for a plain edge since they are more versatile, look better and are way easier to sharpen.

I'd exchange it. It's been ~25 years since I used or wanted to use a partially serrated knife.

For me, a partially serrated knife is the worst of both worlds. I lose the ability to make precise cuts with the heel of the blade, something I do fairly often, and gain the ability to cut fibrous materials slightly better, something I do only rarely.

I always prefer a plain edge in an EDC knife. For special circumstances or tasks that call for a serrated edge, I want the whole thing to be serrated (although Spyderco's approach, with the tip having a tiny bit of plain edge, is perfect for me).

If I ordered a straight edge blade and got serrations. I would return it for the product I ordered. I wouldn't pay for return shipping or any restocking fees, because it was not my fault. Or I would reconsider shopping at the place it was ordered from.

But mistakes happen and we are all human, I wouldn't be pissed off, maybe just disappointed due to the longer wait.

I would also double check the order/ receipt before reaching out to the company to make sure it wasn't my mistake. If I goofed I could see paying return shipping cost being justified.

I wouldn't use it at all so that it can be returned.

Add me to the #me_too_send_it_back group. I have no use for serrations and especially on a $370 (up here) knife that was supposed to be a PE.

Hey fellas, thanks for all of the quick replies. Opened the box and almost threw up in my mouth when I saw the combo blade lol. Aw, it it that bad, but def not for me. It’s why I oredered the OG in the first place. Checked their website, and yeah, my bad! Itchy trigger finger, ya know (new gear haha!). Some old dawgs never learn. Thanks again, guys. Be excellent to each other, and have a great weekend! Oh, and double-check your blade style before punching “order now”!

Can you still return it and eat the cost to get a straight edge blade?

I'd return it for a completely serrated blade. Serrated blades provide two to three times the cutting power of a plain edge blade. Besides serrated blades look cool whereas plain edge blades look...plain.
