I figured if I baited you guys with some pictures, you might be more inclined to help me out with some questions I have. A dirty trick, I know. But these are desperate times we live in!

I friend of mine gave me the scout thing on top. I don't know much about it other than it takes an awesome sharp edge and is in great shape.
The GEC 71 showed up the other day and hasn't seen a lot of action yet. I'm very excited about it as I've been looking for an in between size Soddy for a while.
Last is my Opinel No.7 I whittled it down and then played with a bunch of different stains before settling on burning it followed by a BLO bath.

Okay, questions-
1-This new 71 here locks up tight w/ no play anywhere. My two other GEC's are both 73's, and both have blade play. Is this acceptable by and large, or should I look into sending these in for maintenance? Or is it just a matter of what I'm willing to put up with?

Other questions withdrawn. Sorry about that.

Would love to hear about the technique you used to burn the handle on your opinel. Turned out great looking!

For money one spends on a GEC, I would have the blade play looked at. Buck is really good about that sort of hting and I would have to think that GEC is too.

Nice camper, btw. It's my favorite slip joint pattern.

That black Opinel handle looks pretty good, nice job.

As for blade play on a slipjoint? The way I feel about is there is blade play, and then there is blade play. I just got my Black Bullnose as well and it sounds like mine is like yours, as tight as any slipjoint I have ever felt. Almost every slipjoint I have ever checked has had some play if you wiggle it hard enough. I wish I could express it more clearly, but unless it's something I feel while using the blade I overlook most "play".
I did have one GEC a few years back that was so loose it rattled just by shaking the knife. I sent it in to them to be repaired and it came back perfect.

I agree with Stu. And I'll add that, in this way, the Opinel has sort of wrecked my expectations for all slip joints and lock backs. The way the lockring works, it adds more stability to the joint as you tighten it. While the blade will bend a bit, I never experience play with my Opies.

A nice haul, congrats. My grandpa had the same camper in his collection, sadly the bubbled sheet metal handles don't like lasting and I re-handled mine with peel-ply G10. Saved the shield though.

Yeah, I say send those #73s back.
I had a couple, one with a very slight wiggle and the other with some decent side to side play. I hate blade play, so I really wanted rid of it in my two #73s.
I sent them in to GEC and I had them back three weeks later and they were as tight as I like my knives to be. Since then, the one has been through 3, or 4 deer and has helped me with a few small game chores. Along with the regular everyday chores that come up. Still nice and tight.

Thanks for all the advise, fellas. I don't know what i'd do without you guys.
