It is often suggested on these forums that Carbon V is NOT a particular steel but just a tradename for whatever carbon steel Cold Steel is using at the moment. I don't know if that's correct - but let's assume it is:

Does anyone have (extensive) experiences with the RECENT Carbon V(within a couple of years) and/or the srk as well as the trailmaster from Cold Steel? What are the pro/cons of CV? How does it compare to other carbon steels with a similar hardness?

Cold Steel's homepage doesn't say what the hardness of these CV blades are. Any info on this?

Further, how do the seconds differ in functionality and heat treatning from the ordinary line?

I'm really only interested in the blade (steel) as a heat treated "blank" - and not in the handle nor the sheaths as I'll be modifying these (as well as the blades) by myself.

Thanks,
VIKING DK

According to their catalog, the 2nds are only 2nds because of cosmetic flaws, otherwise the heat treat, steel and performance are the same as the "firsts".

Although I am a maker, I have always had some of the CS products, to sell. From past experience, last 12 years, I beleive the carbonV steel to be different grades of 1095. Since Camillus actually makes Cold Steel products, you might want to visit their website or forum.
IMO, CS products offer good bang for the dollar value charged.

i bought a 2nd of the recon scout a couple of years ago because they had a sale, it was $45. and when the blade came in the mail it wasnt a second at all. it was a killer deal. i have put that knife through hell and its still with me. i do need to have a new handle put on. we were camping and it needed to be used to hammer through a root that was about 11 inches thick. the knife blade is in great shape but the end of the handle is alittle crunched

Very interesting. I've heard Camilus is the actual manufacture for several "makers". Anyone have a list of who they private label for?

I bought a large Carbon V second a couple of years ago for light chopping; and it has been a good blade, although it rusts no matter how careful I am to oil it after every outing. I have no idea why it's a second.

Extreme Ratio has a web site (extremaratiousa.com) that gives the composition of Carbon V: carbon .95, chrome .54, manganese .4, tungsten .015 and vanadium .15. This comp doesn't match up to 1095 or O-1, which I have heard were the real Carbon V.

0.95 isn't a really high carbon, and I find that I like D2 and VG10 a lot better (and without the rusting problem). Haven't tried S30V, but I hear that's better still.
