So I have had great luck in the past week or so concerning knives! A grail, the RAT/Ontario Stockman with punch found its way to me thanks to Dan/silenthunterstudios- a knife I have been wanting ever since I saw it in Tactical Knives (not many knives from this forum introduced by that publication!). It is much more hand filling than I expected and I love it! It is, however, a bit heavy in scrubs, and I feel like I'm going to hit my client in the head as I'm giving a massage, so its an after hours knife now.
Next to a buck stockman:
With its brother the Railsplitter:
Well, I also decided that my birthday is coming up (well I didn't decide that part, my decision follows), and after a bad year and three consecutive years of bad birthdays that I deserve to combine all into this year, so I ordered a Northwoods Gladiator. I love that steel in my Spyderco that has it, I need a moose pattern to complete a Nessmuk Trio, and I wanted it! Great knife so far!
Then this weekend I went to the October gun show in the area. Talking with a vendor I've dealt with before I ask about his slipjoints with punches (almost as nuts about punches as I am about wharncliffes, but I digress yet again). He points out a scout knife, not my thing; then a 4" or so Boker stockman with punch- $85 was a bit out of my range by $65 or so, and it was a bit rough feeling so I passed- but the next three caught my eye. The first is a PAL, spear master, and Spey secondary. Basically unused, as the Spey still has no edge ever put on by the factory along the entire belly! I don't have many Pal knives, so it went into the maybe pile. He then drew my attention to a new favourite- A cattle knife with clip/sheepsfoot/Spey/punch combo! I opened the clip (which is behind the Spey/sheepsfoot, and opens from the left pivot- a first for me!), read the 'oil the joints' on the tang, turned it over and smiled as I saw I*XL on the blade. Ever since I was given an IXL knife from the pocket of an older gentleman as a young adult they have been special to me, and that one disappeared somewhere making its way to Festerfromnzed's house. That was in the 'I will haggle and take this home pile'!
Then my eyes strayed to an odd man in the case. Small, rounded edges, double bolstered and rat tailed grooved. Rosewood handles?........humpback on one end.....no hump on the blade side..... I think I have my first Eureka! A Lakeside Montgomery Ward! Now to find out more about the knife!
Oh, but it is listed at more than what I want to pay. Offer up what I brought to possibly trade, but he wasn't interested. He moves the Boker, and offers me a price that is basically a three for the price of two deal! I take it! He is a bit of a jerk so why not hit him up when he is being nice!
It's funny, but the new knives have already paired up. The Ward and RAT, and Wostenholm and Gladiator seem to compliment each other well, both sets have punches this way!!
If anybody knows anything about the Ward I would love to know more, especially approximate age! I have LG3, but he doesn't have much about the company, and doesn't illustrate a eureka as equal end.
On another note, after getting the three knives on Saturday I decided to check out an antique shop seeing as I had no clients for the late afternoon. I laughed pretty hard to myself when I saw this:
Some decent knives to take a quick view of. Except for the price! Each if these is more than the others I bought at the gun show, actually more expensive than any two of the other knives combined!! Hey, power to them if they get their prices!
Thought I would share and brag a bit. The Ward took ahold of me the second I saw it, somehow it took a place in my heart, odd how they do that some times!!
